Hello everybody!

I have been struggling day or two with solving Windows Update' error 0x80080005. Also, worth to note is when I click the "View update history" or "advanced options", the "Settings" window freezes and closes after a few minutes.

I have tried to "
1) Change the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old

I did this by typing the following commands in the cmd (admin):
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

However when entering the last two commands, I get the message "Acces Denied." Same thing goes when I do in Clean
Boot nor Safe Mode.

2) Run Troubleshooter but does not analyse at all, stuck.

3) Update my Windows through the Media Creation Tool to the latest version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.630)
I downloaded the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft website and hope it will fix the problem however it did not.

Does anyone else have an idea how to solve this error nor the freezing "View update history" and "Advanced options"? Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

rockzor

Error code: (HRESULT) 0x80080005 (2148007941) - Server execution failed
I would also add to the list to check your host file to make sure your are not blocking access to the servers.
I do not know if the error code means that a microsoft server on the internet returned the error or if one of your local services on your machine returned the error. you could unplug your network access and run it again to see what error you get.
if it is a service on your machine you would get the same error. if it is the microsoft server you should get a different error if the internet is down.

the host file was located in this directory:

looks like someone could also modify the services file to cause services to look on the wrong tcp ports.
