How to stop a program from installing on vista

When I start my computer running vista a program tries to install before windows even starts. I cant start in safe mode or even get to a command prompt.

What program, any error messages? there's not much information to work with.
Did you install any new hardware or software before this problem occured?

I start the computer and it opens a window saying windows media guide installing then says that it cannot locate the files on the hard drive then shuts the computer down. There are no options to try and bypass or cancel. Try starting in safe mode and it goes back to the program trying to install. I have not tried to install any thing new. Nothing has changed.

If you have the Vista instalation disk try booting with it and choose the repair option.

Thank you so very much!! I tried every thing I could think of to try and get back into windows. I did as you said. I put in the Vista installer cd and I was able to do a system restore!! I can not tell you how much that has saved me!!
