How Will AMD stay alive?

What I don't understand is that why doesn't AMD, or AMD supporters just use an honest comparison... For example, the above comparison just doesn't make sense. First off, I have no idea what logic they are using to come to that conclusion. Secondly, you don't compare a CPU to a GPU like that. And thirdly, the 5870 is going to be kick butt, there shouldn't be a need to do such a weird, useless comparison; the i7 975 isn't a competitor\substitution for a video card.

Why didn't they just compare the 5870 to a rusty old bicycle or a bowl of fruit, it would have been just as useful...

Its Tflops per watt. I know a few places are sporting the high wide BW of Nehalem to the gfx cards etc, so Im sure theres uses for this, especially in the scientific area, where the Nehalem just wont cut it

Yeah, I still don't fully understand why you would compare it to a CPU though. Comparing to another GPU would be much more meaningful, and it would probably still win by a long shot. But I guess we wouldn't get neato numbers like "17x".

LOL, I was thinking more along the lines of past AMD graphics cards or nVidia graphics cards. I'd hate to think of the comparison between a IGP and the 5870 monster.

Except that Intel does not use its IGP as an APU, unlike what AMD (or Nvidia) is doing.

Theres about 5 new ways for gpus to use everyday apps now, all OS supported, as well as the open end.
It wont matter, using opencl, anything can use cuda, or use any app written right for it to work on gpu.
Its been coming for awhile, itll be here with W7 launch

If that's the case, wouldn't it be more fitting to compare with Nvidia's Quadro and CUDA? After all, there are a lot of things Core i7 can do that FireGL cannot, and vice versa.

Well, if you look up at the top of this thread, the title is "Is AMD Doomed" - seems to me that a Yahoo finance article about possible AMD bankruptcy is, shall we say, more apropos than some Fudzilla story about Atoms not being used on 20 inch "all in one" PCs (whatever those are - notebooks? SOC?). Besides, you were questioning my attributions to "financial pundits" in another thread as being just fabrications by me, so I decided to prove you wrong. Again. 😀

Fazers...it is true that *nobody* could possibly mistake you for anything except being a total intel fanboy. I just want to know what happened to make you so messed up? Did you once buy an AMD then get banned off AMDZone? Do you even realise that you and your sad sycophants (TC and Badtrip for example) talk more about AMDZone than any AMD fan does? 😀

Actually TC seems somewhat jolly to me - hardly "sad". Dunno about Badtrip, but at least he makes sense when he posts 😀.

And I think I have mentioned at least twice now that I have never registered on AMDZone, and obviously it would be difficult to be banned there otherwise 😀.

AMDZone is a shining example of what happens when a bunch of fanbois bozos get together and appoint even more clownish people as mods and admins. There is very little valuable debate & discussion there anymore, just inflated opinions carried to an extreme. For example, one mod there (abinstein IIRC) claims that Barcelona is superior to anything Intel has ever made, on the basis of his own personal benchmarks on "real" work. Nevermind the opinions of just about everybody else including numerous professionals who also post on AMDZone (and even you have admitted Barcie stunk). I think he has personally driven off at least half a dozen former long-term pro-AMD members there, the ones who favored AMD but weren't blind to its product shortcomings and honest enough to say so. And some of these guys appeared to be IT buyers - responsible for purchasing PCs by the hundreds or thousands. That's gotta be really, really stupid for a pro-AMD site to permit. Alienating your more important customers? Sheesh!! And yet the site owners (Chris Tom IIRC) keep this guy on as a moderator. Don't believe me? Just go there and read some of the 1-2 yr old threads and see what happens...
