So I need help. I am getting big frame drops in games. Let's take Star Wars Battlefront as an example. I didn't had this problem before and it started today.. I have in the bigger game modes (walker assault etc.) around the 100 FPS. For some reason I am having big frame drops since today. Frame drops to 50 FPS sometimes... This really makes me sad and mad. Because I payed al lot of money for this GPU and PC. The lag spikes are really random and occur out of nowhere.

Also in GTA V I am suddenly having big lag spikes. When I drive around, when I normally had no lag spikes or sometimes had a really small one, I am now having lag spikes constant.

I even have lag spikes with V-Sync on. Than it happens that there are small frame drops from 60 to 59-57.

The Temperature of both my GPU and CPU are fine. GPU : around 70 celsius. CPU : around 56 celsius.
Drivers up too date.
GPU usage around 90%.
CPU usage around 90% sometimes peeking to 99%.
Enough space on my SSD and HDD.

This is really weird because as I have mentioned multiple times, it just started today..

Origin has crashed twice since today. That also never happened before.

This is my PC:

Intel i5 4460.
EVGA Geforce GTX 1070 FTW
16GB Ram.
Z97S SLI Krait Edition.
1000 GB HDD.
250 EVO Samsung SSD.
Seasonic M12II Evo 620W.
Windows 10

Okay, the big frame drop issue is solved. But for my idea I have a little lower FPS. Especially on the heavier maps. And the game play doesn't feel very smooth but stuttery. I think I might re-install Windows again.. I have done that 4 times in a time span from 3 months. 3 times with my old hardware and 1 time with my new hardware, which I have more than just one month now..

There was another Windows update last night, you should wait and update first.

So the big frame drop issue is gone for now.

But I think I have a lower FPS than before.. I think I had like aroun 130 FPS before (Star Wars Battlefront as an example), now I get around 100 and it even drops to 76 FPS sometimes. I also saw some Youtube videos from people with the GTX 1070 and they also get around 135 FPS. They do have a better CPU tho. (sidenote: I have the resolution scale on 125 in stead of 100, as the people in the Youtube videos. But if I change that to 100, I don't feel like that makes the FPS any better. I already tested that.) I also saw some people getting 140+ FPS on Battlefield 4, where I have around 80 or so. They all do have a very good CPU like the i7 6700k or something like that, I have the i5 4460. Can a CPU really make that a big difference?

What could be the problem of that? I still have frame drops, but not as heavy as before. Now it goes from 100 FPS to around 80..

I reinstalled Windows and all my drivers. Nothing helped. Is this because of Windows or is there something wrong with my GPU or CPU?

They have the same settings in game as I have. And still they have around 30+ more FPS. Is my CPU the "problem" than? Besides, it is still weird that I had 130 FPS first, (SWBF) and now I am getting around 100. And it sometimes drops to 80.. How is that possible?

I've also got a GTX 1070 and i7-5820K and I've got these lag spikes too :( I'm not seeing it in any other games though and it never used to do it with GTA 5, so I'm guessing new NVIDIA drivers are causing it or one of the GTA updates has caused it.

So I seem to be having huge fps problems and lag too. it started suddenly just lastnight and today too. My 1070 was getting 30 fps on skyrim 1080p. and today it is getting a high of 47 fps on shadow of mordor, where just a week ago it was getting over 100. Thank you for making this thread. .

Performance has dropped..

Noticing my GPU score has actually improved, and my CPU score has actually reduced.. Making the overall score lower..

I also played FIFA 17. In the beginning I had the problem that my FPS was stuck on 30 in the menus and during the animations in game. That problem was gone. But now I have around 50 FPS in the menus and also 40-50 FPS in the animations. Making me believe there is really something wrong with or Windows or the Nvidia drivers or some of my hardware. Really weird, this all happened probably just out of nowhere..

Hey thank you for pointing that out. How can I change that? And if I do, I still don't think that might be the solution. But still I will give it a try.

So can anyone tell me how to fix that?

Looking at GPU-Z my GPU load is all over the place, when the lag spikes seem to happen, my GPU load drops from like a solid 80% down to like 20/30%.

I've now tried lowering the settings in-game and updating bios and still has the problem.

Here is a snippet from the GPU-Z Log where it dropped suddenly:

This is really starting to concern me. Not knowing what causes this problem. Is it Windows, the drivers or is the GTX 1070 just not so good. Getting a frame rate from 130 and after just a month it drops to around 98.. Not really something you would expect. Or is my CPU just starting to die? Just hoping it is Windows or so..

Check temperature of the CPU again with intel processor diagnostics, because the turbo core was not reached anymore

update intel drivers with intel update utility, because windows could have altered them

run memtest86+, because of the lower result after the installation of the additional RAM
Use the autoinstaller on http://memtest.org/#downiso
and an empty USB flash drive
Boot from this stick and run at least two complete cycles of all tests.

check if the RAM actually runs in DUAL channel mode with CPU-Z (Tab memory). Also have a look there, if the timings (cas latency-> CL and others) are set right, like crucial is promising.

The RAM is probably in DUAL channel mode. I checked this a month ago or so. I think the temperature is fine. but I will check it anyway with that intel tool. Drivers are already up to date. I did that yesterday. But not with the intel update utility. I do everything when I am home again.

It's really sad seeing everyone getting good performances while mine are pretty low, compared to theirs of course.

[strike]Hmm I've failed the test on CPU Frequency: http://imgur.com/a/Kdnk4 going to see if it's lowering CPU in bios to save power.[/strike]

Disabled EZ_XMP on my motherboard and restored it to default but I still get the major fps drops :( I've found that driving fast and weaving around can make it really really bad, down to like 6 fps.

Okay, so here are the results:

It passed the memory test from memtest86+. No errors detected. (I only did one cycle. I had no time for another one.)

RAM runs in dual channel mode. Here is an overview:
lRnC1Of.jpg

Passed the test from IntelProcessor Diagnostic Tool:

Do I need to look at the GPU Temp again with the IntelProcessor Diagnostic Tool while gaming? So yes, where do I see the temperature?

For some reason, whenever I open up the intel update utility, I can download the same driver over and over again. Every time I download the driver and I install it, restart my PC, and open up again the same program, it shows the same driver, ready to download. When I already installed it twice, using that tool.

So I am going to play some games now. I will let you know if something changed.

I can try that again, but I have looked at that several times. I can almost assure you 100% that that's not the issue.

I think I did. I used MSI Live update 6 and the intel update utility for updating my drivers. I will look this evening if that is indeed done.

I reduced the Resolution Scale from 125 back to 100. I seems that it needed some time to adjust that, but after some minutes I did reached around 150 FPS Again. But when I played Walker Assault and got close to the AT-AT, the FPS dropped again to 80 / 76. Like if the AT-AT is causing a FPS drop or something. Or when there are a lot of players on the same spot. Maybe it is just that game (Star Wars Battlefront) not optimised very well?
