I am trying to set up 2 external monitors

I am trying to set up 2 external monitors. My HP laptop Dv6 1259dx is running Vista with plans to upgrade to Windows 7. There is one port for an external monitor on the computer itself and one on the docking station. I plan to use only those 2 external monitors and not the one on the laptop. I cannot get it to recognize the monitor plugged into the computer, just recognizes the one plugged into the docking station. I would like to be able to have two complete different displays on each monitor (not mirror). Is this possible, or do I need another piece of hardware? Thank you.

I've got the same problem! Except, I'm plugging 2 monitors to my laptop using a VGA Y splitter. I've tried setting it on Windows 7, DisplayFusion, and UltraMon, but in every case, it only detects 1 external monitor and the laptop. If you have any luck, or someone knows how to fix this problem, please let us know!
