I just bought a XFX 4890, but it has one freakin' 8pin!!

So I just bought a XFX 4890 3 hours ago, but when I finally got around to putting it in, -
I saw to my horror a 6pin and a 8pin slot for power (on the graphics card). FRICK!

I have an Antec Neo HE500 (500watt) power supply and as far as I can see and understand it has no 8pin connectors?? :cry:

Is there any work around? (adapter, eventhough the manual says nothing). And is this the case on every 4890 card? I was looking at a ASUS 4890 aswell in the store, and now I'm wandering if I should have gone with the ASUS. I can still go back and swap it... But not before monday, so in the spirit of Elliot Reid DOUBLE FRICK!!

And just to make matters worse, I think I killed my old graphics card when I threw it on the sofa, and now I have to use my ex girlfriends super old and sucky laptop (because she of course has mine until I'm done reinstalling hers).... Worst weekend ever...

Anyway, thanks for the link. I might have found a guy who's open tomorrow.
But I doubt he has what I need, his site looks.... Well, lackfull...
 
Although I am more of a dog person... I could never bring myself to kill kittens or any other furry animal.

It's just my favorite "angry" line, when I feel unjustified (or somehow cheated) and unable to do anything about it.
It might not work so well in a forum where the sarcasm in my "voice" can't be heard :heink:
 
Ha, I just recently installed a new Corsair 750TX, and was wondering why the 6pin PCI-E jacks had an extra detachable 2 pin connector....I guess this is why.
 

I've seen it on the cheaper cards going at near 100 they are usually like a few bucks cheaper but only has like the video card and maybe one other thing thrown in. But on a 4890 is a bit iffy they should have at least thrown in 4pin molex to 8 pin pcie
 
I think my card was one of the cheaper ones.... It had a adapter from 4pin to 6pin.
A little annoying that it didn't include a 6 to 8 🙁
Anyway, I orded 2 online (one extra for when I upgrade next year), so now I just have to play the waiting game :-/

Side question... Is there any voltage difference in a 6pin a 8pin? Is 8 better and why?
 
apparently you cant use a single 4-pin molex to 8-pin pci-e it just doesnt supply enough power you can get 2 4-pin molex to 6-pin pci-e but i have been looking around for the 8-pin adapter myself and they are quite hard to find.. the 6to8pin ones are most likely your best bet

I got my 6to8pin adapter and now it works.

I don't know what it is about ATI cards, but they rub my funny bone... I've been semi forced to use nvidia the last 3years, (long and retarded story), but being a ATI owner again just feels right.... 😍
 
It may have just been there as a "feature" to allow more OC headroom. 8 and 6 pin have the same voltage, but the 8 pin has one extra 12V wire which allows higher current (and thus the 150W vs 75W rating). The old 2900XT had a six and a 8 pin, but as long as you did not OC in CCC, you could run with just 6 and 6. 6 and 6 may have worked in your case as well, but as the 6 to 8 converters are cheap (and you already got one) might as well use the converter.
 


Your right, the extra power seems to be encase I want to use/do something called overdrive (or something like that, I don't have the manual in front of me now).
It's already slightly OC'ed as default.... And I'm not planning on OC'ing, so the adapter seems to work fine for now.
 
overdrive is the basic ATI overlock program in which you could boost your Mhz RAM and Venitlator rotation speed 😛 pretty usefull if u are feeling overheated
 
Yes, that is exactly the same. You want to use the adaptor so it will allow you into Overdrive, even if you don't OC. Because, that is where the Fan controller is, and like hero16 said, that can come in handy sometimes.
 
Anyone know what adapter he bought for this?

because there are 2 types. 2 6 pin to 1 8 pin. and there is 1 6 pin to 1 8 pin... having the exact problem so i dont want to burn anything 😛

I used the 1 6 pin to 1 8 pin with no issue on my 2900XT. There is no need to have 2 6 pin plugs, since although twice the power may be carried, the wires in the 6 pin alone are already more than enough for 150W (the 8 pin's spec). Some corsair PSUs even do 1 6 pin to 2 8 pin plugs.
 
Yeah i got the XXX version wich is pre-OC'd(XFX RADEON HD4890 XXX 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI)

Strange they added the 8-pin for just that 😗 .

Okey ill go for the 6pin to 8pin then and hope it works :)
