I want to build a ultra settings gaming pc that will last 6+ years, my budget would be 800-950 i guess. I am not an overclocker. I do some streaming on twitch and i make videos from the streaming content on youtube. What would you guys recommend i build for my needs?
I need an OS, and i have monitors. I have the case that i want picked out, which is the corsair 300R.
I play a lot of online games more than single players too by the way, so idk if i should go hard on cpu or hard on gpu or both? What do you guys think?!

Thanks in advance =]

Hey tiny - I really don't want to fork this thread.
Depends which games you're playing? (I don't play the games Tom's uses for benchmarks ... except ArmA ... see below.)

Peek
the video I made the other day. I'm not disgusted. But I ain't impressed, either.
It was a test, so I left video settings where I had them. (High, prolly, but not ultra.) Also, likely had a number of things running background. I didn't want to optimize: I wanted to test something like typical case ... easy going, like.
What GPU do you have? That is likely your issue.
7870 by GigaByte. No OC on it, or on CPU.
Also try a different program like DXtory.
Maybe will do. For now, I wanted the test to be sorta "what most folk use most of the time". But thanks for data.
FRAPS does not like AMD CPUs and they take a much bigger performance hit than Intel does.
heh does //anything// like AMD?!! ;-p
But ayup, Intel in my next build.

p.s. I normally get 30+ FPS in ArmA3 ... which is my benchmark game.

i love my ssd's. will not go back to mechanical drives for my os (unless they build something faster)
and i also put in there a few games. not waiting around is nice and apps open A LOT faster. it doesn't help in the fps but it gives you a better experience (quick to load, barely have to wait for an area to load)

I reccommend you come up with a few thousand more. youd be lucky to get a single 3 generation old video card, 8 gigs ram, a phenom 2x4 965 with a crappy mobo and case and a 5400 rpm, hard drive for that and it you only want to play bejeweled or minecraft for the next 6 years well you got your wish.

I have 2 840 pros. and cant wait to get my hands on a couple 850 pros and set them up in raid with that 3d memory storage the throughput is sick. you ar right once you get an ssd theres no going back

Here is my build I am doing. I will eventually sli the gpu.

Processor - Intel Core i5 4690k
CPU Cooler - NZXT Kraken x61
Motherboard - Asus Z97 MAXIMUS VII Hero
RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB
SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
Graphics Card - Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970
Power Supply - EVGA SuperNOVA 850w G2 Gold
Case - NZXT H440

No current hardware is going to be any use in six years. Look at any top-end PC from 2008 and see if it will meet current software demands, let alone games. Who can tell how games will be distributed in the future? Don't make the mistake of assuming things won't change. Remember when we bought games on CD? CDs have gone the way of floppies. Will games be 3D and require totally new hardware? Who knows. Holographic? Forget trying to future proof as we can not imagine the future but for sure the future will be way different to what we think.

Hazz. This I just a preference.. But don't you think that the x61 for a 4690k is a little overkill? Would have made more sense to get an i7 and an evo 212. That way you are basically OCing .4ghz already. And you get more l3 cache and hyper threading. All that for the same price as an i5 and an x61. But I conpeltely understand you decision if OCing is a hobby or something you enjoy to do. Just wanted to know you reasoning :)

Yeah really I just enjoy tinkering on the software and hardware side of things. I don't feel I'm up to doing a full blown closed loop on my first build, and I find the Kraken appealing. I will OC the chip to the max! Also, if I upgrade the CPU in the future to an i7, the Kraken will come in handy for those extreme OCs.

What a strange question. Troll rubbish?
Six years from now there will be 120Hz - 240Hz for 3D gaming. 1440p or 4k will be standard.
CPUs will be at least three times faster than intels current top model. Same goes for current GPUs in quad sli/cf.
So: No way. Even for 10k.

you can check this out: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3Zn499
this build's focus is on expandability while being good as well.

it got up to 1k because of the ssd. skip that if you want & you'll still be in range of your budget...
but if you're gonna be doing more than just games & also be creating content, it would very much give you an advantage to have an ssd. you can also go for a 120gb ssd which would be cheaper.

this build can help you overclock later on if you'd want to as well. & believe these guys here, it does help a lot if you want things to go faster. lastly, faster rams will increase performance but it's not like it will all be that noticeable in real world usage. those are for enthusiasts who wants to push the limits (in my pov). =)

You are trying to get a Smart Car to perform like a Ferrari. It will never happen. You are also asking that someone predict what graphic engines games will be using in the future, also, never gonna happen. As other above stated, a current 900 dollar system would be hard pressed to run anything at MAX/ULTRA settings. Of your 900 budget, you will also need an OS, bringing your actual parts budget to 750 to 800.00. A good PSU (which is the basis of system stability) will be in the low 100's. Figure you have a 650 watt PSU @ 80% efficient (650 x .8 = 520 watts) is the reliable wattage. Assuming your old enough to own a car would you run your car at the engines max RPM for 5 years without it blowing up or failing somewhere along the line? Please be realistic in your request of term and budget and what you seek from that investment in return.

New to this forum, but over 30 years building experience/modding/overclocking etc.

Your budget is too low to meet your needs. But whatever you do, wait for the Skylake processors, pretty big changes are coming with it and waiting helps you stay current for a little longer. The should be out by Q4.

Jesus Christ!hehe
Unless you are doing old fashioned work in DOS or something, I know a lot of my family members seem to always upgrade from NVIDIA to ATI, etc. However, I am on a super-low budget becuase I am poor. So my mom just got me one of the lower Intel chips for $350 plus tax at BestBuy. It is not powerful for the games out today however I use it for just the basics and slow programming. Programming in Borland Turbo C 2.01 is an ancient language hehe

Upgrade from Nvidia to ATI!? I think that's considered a downgrade isn't it? Nvidia is top o' the line and AMD is for people on a budget... and I am an AMD user, as well as Intel. I am in no way knocking AMD(no I am not a fanboy either, I will purchase either or depending on price to performance).
Lower Intel chips for $350!?!? You can get an i7 for cheaper than that. Bestbuy is a rip off usually, so not too surprised there... I did hear they price match though, so that changes things a bit.

You have to ask them to price match. They don't offer it by being "BestGuys" 😉

Well duhhhh... you have to ask any store to price match, they don't just do it automatically lol.

Yikes...Sorry not gonna happen. I spent that much just on one Video Card. You want an Ultra Settings PC and have no budget to support it. And 6 years, no way. 2 years if your lucky. And you need to be prepared to spend alot more...

This is just so wrong...

Performance aside, the few times I tried an AMD/ATI card I had noting but problems. Driver problems, visual artifacts, etc, that ALL disappeared when I pulled out that junk and switched to Nvidia...

There was a time when ATI cards were pretty good. This was years ago. Now, they are only good for filling the landfill...
