Hi,

So I want to uninstall Windows 10 32 bit from my pc and install a 64 bit version. Is that possible? If so, how do I do it?

Thanks,
Nathan

Solution

Power off
Boot up, and go into the BIOS. You may have to change the boot order to cause the system to boot from this Windows install thing you just created on the external drive.
Assuming it boots from that....follow the prompts...

Where did your current Win 10 come from?

But all you should need is a new 64bit Win 10 install, from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Create your own USB or DVD, install.
This will be a full wipe and reinstall. There is no 'upgrade' from 32bit to 64bit.

My current windows 10 came from the windows website. I downloaded a 64 bit also from the windows website. I want to replace the 64 bit with the 32 bit. I just don't know how.

Mostly, just like you did it the first time.
This time, though...you need to delete all the existing partitions on the drive, and then install the 64bit.
You'll be starting over from a bare OS.

What do you mean by, "delete all the existing partitions?"

Going from a 32bit OS to a 64bit OS is a full wipe and reinstall.
If you don't delete ALL the existing partitions on the drive when you do this, you will end up with a confusing mess.

1. How many physical drives are in this system?
2. Who installed the existing OS the first time?

I don't know what "partitions" are. The only drive is the internal hard drive. I put windows 10 64-bit on my external hard drive. I installed the existing OS the first time.

OK...

How did you put Win 10 64bit on your external drive?
You really need to do this from a thumb drive or DVD.

Partitions?
As you boot up from your Win10 64bit install thing....when it asks 'where' to install it to..select Custom.
You will be presented with a list of all existing partitions. (Partition = parts of your hard drive)
Select each one, and delete.
Leaving one large empty space.
Let Windows install to that space, creating what it needs.

Then...you'll have to install all the drivers for your hardware, and all your applications. Just like you did the first time.

I downloaded it from the windows website (the link you provided). Unfortunately, I don't have a disc or thumb drive that has enough space to download windows. I'll get back to you about what you said.

By installer thing, do you mean the thing where it asks where you want to install it? If so, I don't see a a custom button. The only options are to put it on a usb for another pc or to upgrade the pc. If you're not referring to that, please tell me what you are referring to.

OK, yes...we're talking about two whole different things.

You're at the stage of trying to create a Win 10 64bit installer.
Apparently all you have is an external drive?
Is there anything on this drive you wish to keep? If so...STOP NOW.

No, there is nothing on the external hard drive besides Windows 10 64 bit. I've already created it.

I really wish you had a 8GB USB stick.

Using this external HDD will completely reformat it, to 37GB.
Resulting in you coming back in a couple of days trying to get the space back to what it should be.

Anyway....
Put the MediaCreation tool on your regular HDD, not the external.
Run it, and tell it to create an install for use on another system.
Then, tell it which drive to use. Preferably, an 8GB USB. But whatever...
Report back when you're done.

??
Windows 10 INSTALLER is setup on a USB hard drive or just the downloaded ISO file?

If just the ISO then move back to main HDD and use RUFUS and try to create on the USB HDD (if possible) or buy an 8GB USB stick or burn to dual-layer DVD. USB stick is best, and it's rewriteable and handy to use for other stuff.

If setup, then you would:
(have your original e-mail and password if you had one as you'll be prompted during the end setup)

1. BOOT to the USB drive and follow the installation instructions (will lose all data on the internal W10 drive)

2. if prompted for a KEY don't enter one.

3. after installation finishes confirm that Activation worked. Hopefully the Microsoft server (must have network access) will detect your new install, realize you had W10 previously, then auto-activate for you.

Not sure if going from 32-bit to 64-bit is problematic or not.

Using RUFUS didn't work. Can I still try and boot from the usb? If so, how?

How did it fail?
You tried to create a bootable drive, from an ISO that lives on the same drive.

This will not work.

Put the Mediacreation tool on your existing OS drive.
Run it
Tell it which drive to create the bootable install thing on. Preferably, an 8GB thumb drive.

Windows is downloading onto the external hard drive as we speak.
