i5 4690K vs i5 6500

what is better for gaming, I will not be overclocking.

I have 2 pc's and I want to put the best parts together.

The 6500 pc has 16 gb of ram dd4 and the 4690K has 8gb ddr3. I don know if the cpu's will work with both motherboards.

Are one of the cpu's better at gaming?

the 6500 will be the better cpu. but not by a whole lot. and no the motherboards are not interchangeable. totally different socket for each cpu.

stick with the 6500 system until you can upgrade to something a bit more modern. they are both 4 cores which will limit you on some of the newest AAA games, but the 6500 is a stronger cpu for sure

Sounds good, what basically happened was I had a gamming PC that had the 4690k, 8gbs, and a 1060 3gb. I came across a business pc for basically free that had 16 gb and the 6500. What im gonna do is swap the power supply and gpu over to the business pc.

nice can't complain about a freebie.

the 4690k is still a decent cpu it's just showing it's age for the newest latest and greatest. i still have a 4690k machine in my house as well. and it is not collecting dust but still enjoying daily use

I’m not convinced the 6500 is any better and a quick search found this which isn’t a great comparison but goes with my expectation. This is of course also without overclocking the 4690k which would then give it a small lead. https://www.cpu-world.com/benchmarks/Intel/Core_i5-6500.html

take the small bit better the 6500 is + 16 gb ram instead of 8gb and it's a no brainer. the newer system is a better choice.

split hairs if you wish but it's not really a difficult choice to make.
