When i first got this computer i was told the 6400 might be a bottleneck, out of the box is runs at 2.7 GHz and turbos to 3.4 it believe. I plan on getting a new mobo in the near future and i was wondering if my lack of performance in games like AC Origins, SGW3, etc were because of the CPU or because of my GPU. I have a reference GTX 1060 6GB. Thanks for your input!

Download MSI Afterburner or use window task manager to check CPU/GPU/RAM usage. If any of them runs at or near 100% consistently, then that one is bottleneck your system. Your i5 6400 is 6th gen CPU so that means your mobo may just need bios update then it will work with 7th gen CPU also. You can upgrade cpu to i7 6700K or 7700K or i7 non-K version without the need to buy new mobo.

i have that cpu with a gtx950. its not the greatest. solid medium at 60fps 1080p. in prey, doom, and resi7 though it was a mix of medium and low. the 2gb of vram really crippled those games so you might have a better experience with 6gb.
