I am looking to get back into PC gaming and I would like to build my own computer for the first time. I would like to try and build something that is going to last me 2-3 years maybe more with expansion/upgrades. I would like to play mostly FPSs (yes including crisis) and RPGs with highest settings. I don’t mind waiting for better quality products to go on sale so suggestions on that front is appreciated as well.
I am going to visit family this weekend where there is a micro center and I am considering buying the i7 920 or the 860 while I am there. Not sure which one is better for gaming and future proofing. Also, is there anything else I should pick up while I am there? Do they have better deals then online merchants for any other parts? I heard that it is better to ask for the D0 stepping rather than the C0. Is that still something I need to ask for with the 920 and 860?
I am just planning on running a one card configuration, but I want a good card so that I can put another one in later for SLI or Crossfire.
