Question IDE → AHCI with Win 10 Install

Currently running Win 7 and mobo that only supports SATA IDE config (and raid, but I don't care about that). Will the OS installation cover the AHCI driver required by the new mobo or is this something I should have in place before the mobo/OS switch?

Looking around elsewhere it seemed there might have been a chance to keep running windows 7 with this new chipset even if it means getting extra USB 2.0 slots from an additional pci card, but the (seeming) fact that AMD's 970 chipset does not seem to support the newer SATA configuration kind of makes this effort moot... so I'm finally biting the bullet and going with the new OS.

A new windows installation will select the appropriate driver according to your BIOS settings. If you want to use the old Windows installation, you have to manually change the settings in the registry before switching... Here's how;

Don't try to reuse a windows installation. You will have the least problems with a new motherboard if you do a clean OS install with the new motherboard.

With so different MB and whole system, you'd need to do clean windows installation anyway, if it was W10 you'd have a chance to reuse it although with much work.

Thanks for the replies... I'm just being over-cautious it seems then.

Next thing to find out is if my win 7 key will work for 10 or not.

If your Win7 key is legal, it should work easily for W10.
