I would like to know from you folks out there with ata 100 boards and cables, How do i tell a regular ide cable from one that is ata 100, is there a tell tale sign or numbering system are they colored differently? the reason i ask is i have a bunch of cables here and i dont know which are which. i have some that have a blue end grey middle and black end, and i know the ata 100 cables are like that also but do they also sell regular ide cables with the same coloring?

If you Overclock an Intel Processor fast enough, it will turn into an AMD. True Story.

Yeah- but if you don't want to count all the frigin wires you can visibly tell the difference between ATA66/100 from ATA33/Mode 2. The ATA66/100 cables are much thinner and the wires "look" smaller. Also, most cables are labeled...

Can i use an ata66/100 cable to run an ata33 drive?

These things are all backward compatible.

Will they still work for running devices such as CD-rom CDRW Zip Drives etc. or are they exclusivly a hard drive cable?

They will work fine for connecting CD-ROMs, CD-RWs, etc.

Yes, and Zip drives too. But you only really need one on the hard drive side, becuse even the fastest CD-ROM drives only run 10MB/s. So if your using two cables you can cheap out on the second.

Really anything in Ultra DMA mode can benefit from using an ATA66/100 cable, theoretically. How much you notice on older UDMA devices is probably debateable. (Why I don't say other transfer modes, because if you can't see it in older UDMA devices, you probably won't in DMA or PIO). But the ground wires increasing signal integrity should only help.

IDE cables that ATA-66/100 have 3 different colored connecotrs on them. Usually Blue for the connector that goes into the motherboard, black on the other end for the main IDE device, and gray in the middle for the secondary device. I have not seen any ATA-66/100 cables colored differently yet, but I think ATA-100 may use a red connector on some cable and boards, but the cables are noticeably different.
