IEEE 1394 port is driving me nuts

Yo, I hope someone out there has atleast a similar problem as mine, and I
hope someone has an answer...any opinions would definetly come in handy. Now
on to my question; I own a Dell 4600 running on windows XP, and my only
firewire (IEEE 1394) port is thru my Audigy 2 ZS sound card which I have
installed...Now, my problem is, I cannot get my Sony Handicam DCR-HC30 to
connect to my PC. I use a Belkin 4-6 pin firewire cable and I can't seem to
get anywhere. I've heard from numerous sources that, faulty cables, or
incorrect connections can fry the camera's DV connection...is this true? When
I plug in the cam to my PC, absolutley nothing happens....nothin'. What could
be some of the problems? Or am I doing somethin' wrong here? I really hope I
didn't fizzle my camera...anyone with some honest answers, please reply to
this post. Thanx.

I'm no expert, Dork, but I have just installed a completely separate card in
my pc for the firewire and it works a treat. It sounds to me as though your
sound card is not capable of dealing with video, and you need a different bit
of hardware to get the camera working.

Interesting I have a dell 4600 and an audigy 1, it works fine, I have a
samsung dvi. one when you look at network connections do you see the 1394
connection listed? two don't expect anything to happen I had no luck with
supplied software so I tried moviemaker and it handled the whole thing. I got
2 choices one is name of camera connected and secound just says digital
device or something you might have to try both I think it was the most
unlikely like device, pick auto to have software rewind then transfer entire
tape or manual where you control camera from software and choose what to
capture , then you can drag clips the software makes to timeline and add
trasitions and titles I was amazed by the quality of free software first time
it took about an hour to make a complete movie of trip to horse show with
kids , actually

It is unlikely you have damaged your cam.

Check you have the latest drivers from creative a early ones were not fully
ieee1394 compatible.

Does xp ping when the cam is connected? If not
ensure cam is powered by mains, turned on in vcr/playback position,
connected to pc.
Faulty/poor cables are common and if you don't get the ping, I'd try another
known to work cable first.
