I have an Inspiron 8100 which I've had for about 3 years. The laptop has
seen very litttle use. I noticed a few weeks ago that a purple line would
appear all the way from the top of the screen to the bottom when I first
turned the laptop on. The line would go away in about ten seconds. Now the
purple line remains even after Win XP starts up. Is this a bad pixel or
something else? As I said, the line goes all the way from the top to the
bottom.

Thanks so much

No real idea, but that may be a backlight issue.

Thanks,
I'm trying to determine if it is an Inverter issue or maybe a loose cable. I
hope it is not a dead pix.

1st try it on an external monitor, if it does it on that its a fault on the
graphics card if it doesnt then its more than likely an LCD fault but you
could try reseating the cables at both ends ie the panel and systemboard

Thanks,
I tried it on an external monitor and all is fine on the external monitor. I
guess I'll try reseating the cables.

A dead pixel will be one small white dot, not a streak down the
screen. I don't know what you have, but one pixel will not bother a
thing.

Sounds to be most likely a losoe cable. The fact that when it started to do
it, it went away after a short while (things heat up). Now, it has most
likely come loose enough that it will not fix itself once things heat up.

The fault is either the video flex cable (yes, try re-seating it first) or
the lcd panel itself.

It is not the inverter or the backlight. The inverter supplies correct
voltage to the backlight, if the backlight or the inverter is not working
properly the entire screen will not illuminate or will be off color
(reddish).

If re-seating the video flex cable doesn't solve the problem, then get a
replacement video flex cable, they are not expensive out on ebay. If that
does not fix the problem, it is the lcd panel and you are SOL.

Update:

I reseated the cable at the board, and all is perfect now!. I hope it stays
that way.

Thanks to all that replied. The information was VERY helpful.

Thanks again,

Inverter? Are you using a power inverter to convert 12VDC to 110VAC such as
in a car or boat? You do know that SOME power inverters produce 400HZ
rather than 60HZ and ALL but the most expensive produce square waves
(sometimes rounded a little with a capacitor on the output) rather than sine
waves. I wonder if either of these could be the source of your problem...
