I'm building a pc, how do you install your os onto the ssd?

I would just have the hdd unplugged while setting up the pc but then i would have to manually set the install a non default drive with every program i have.

One thing i'm thinking of doing is that there's an option (after install) to migrate the os somewhere else, will that change any of my defaults for installs?

Solution
The migration/cloning process is performed by a 3rd party tool and not by a Windows setting or option.

If you clone/migrate your OS it will be the exact same OS as the one from the source drive, meaning that all the settings and everything will be the same. However, if you plan on cloning the OS from another computer and using it on a completely different system, this most likely won't work, because the OS has already been configured for different hardware.

As for the clean install step-by-step tutorial I promised, here it is: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-windows-10-clean-install.html
Hey there, Willbound.

You have 2 options (as you've already figured out) - OS migration or a clean install.

If you can tell me which version of Windows you're going to use, I will be able to send you a step-by-step tutorial on how to perform a clean install. You're quite right about leaving only the drive you're installing Windows to, connected to the motherboard during the installation process. This will prevent possible future booting issues.

The other option is a cloning/migration process. You can check out this tutorial on how to do it: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows.

Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I've missed something.
