I just downloaded it (I think) off Kazaaa as an .exe file which is about 364MB (Is this right?). Well when I double click the file a small DOS window appears for about 1/10th of a second then disappears, leaving nothing running. Im running Windows 2000 Pro, does this make any difference?

No,, theres a DOOM 3 Icon which has a little logo of doom , you run that and it runs the game.
never even heard of a dos program to run the game,.....

I've had a few files from Kazaa do that to me too... Sometimes they're cd images that somehow get the ".exe" extension placed on them. (don't ask me why) You can try changing the extension to ".bin" and burn it as an image file in Nero. It's worked for me a couple of times... Hope it helps.

YAY! its currently being extracted by WinRAR. I think it was just labelled .exe to make it a valid file. Brilliant thanks a lot

thanks for the post, i thought i wasted the entire weekend's worth of downloading with this file. changed the extension to .rar and it seems to be working.

in case anybody else comes across the same problem, like tombance's file, mine is 364mb and the file name is doom3.e3-demo-alpha-leak.exe. i'm sure you can find the same file called a bunch with a bunch of different names, but thats the one i downloaded.

there is also a file called doom_iii_alpha_FIX.exe floating around, anybody have any idea what that does?

No problem! :)

One more problem. When I start it up I get the ID console and then it starts in a window. I can't change it to full screen anywhere. Also, if I try to start a game I get the error: 'Doom3.exe has caused an unknown error and will be closed down by windows ' (or something like that), (running windows 2000 pro). Does this have anything to do with the mentioned fix, because I havened done anything with that yet. Do I have to place it in some directory?

i asked about the file doom_iii_alpha_FIX.exe in my other post...i now know what it does...it takes care of the starting in a window problem (at least it did on winxp). the file is an executable, when it asks just browse to the folder where you un-rared the big file (if it doesnt ask you to replace files, then you missed the directory, it took me two times to get it right, its a little funky). when you are done you have two new exe's...to start doom3 with or without the demo movie.

Dammit, I just deleted Doom3 :frown: . O well, Ill have to download it again wont I. Thanks a lot 😀

well when i downloaded and run the game it worked windowed :) and it was giving an error message and closing anyhow deleting the doomconfig.cfg solves this problem .. dont worry it creates a new config gile with default res. if u want to change the res. bring the console by pressing "~" and type "r_mode 1" for 400x300 "r_mode 2" 512x384" , "r_mode 3" 640x480 ..... "r_mode 4" 800x600 "r_mode 5" 1024x768 and goes on up to 8 for 1600x1200..... anyhow if u deleted the file there is no point in telling all these right ???? if u need the file again .. and have a fast connection .. i can try to send u with yahoo or something else..
take care good luck ...

That's what you get when you try to run alpha-level code.

Ok everyone, luckily im on .5Mbit ADSL so I simply downloaded the file again. It now all works with the fix and considering its currently running in default res I want to put it up to 1280x1024 (the size of my LCD) so im guessing this would be mode 5, 6 or 7, ill just try each one seperately.

Ummm, I tried the r_mode 6 thing and nothing happened, the resolution didnt change. Whats wrong? Do I need to delete the config file before this works?
