I understand my computer's old but I can't afford a new PC right now.. A CPU upgrade is all I'm looking for now

Firstly you'll need to update your BIOS to ensure compatibility with the latest Core 2 Duo processors. The most recent version of your BIOS is 1.0.18, which was released 3/11/2009; your current version is 1.0.3 (which was released in 2007.) You can download the latest version of your BIOS from Dell for your 530s here. The guide to installation is on that page too.

Second your motherboard is the Foxconn G33M02 (Dell ORY007), which unfortunately does NOT support Core 2 Quad processors. Your motherboard only supports Core 2 Duo processors, and with the BIOS update I mentioned, you'll be able to install almost any C2D. With your current BIOS, you are limited in upgrades and you cannot accept any CPU beyond an E6320 (basically any CPU released after 2007.) Updating your BIOS is crucial if you want to upgrade your CPU.

You should be able to install a Core 2 Duo E8600 at best, but I've not seen any Dell 530s tested with that processor. I have however found an E8500 which works perfectly; hence theoretically the E8600 should be compatible too. A reminder however, these processors will only be compatible after a BIOS update. So update your BIOS before purchasing the new CPU.

In your scenario, you should update your BIOS and then purchase the Core 2 Duo E8500. The E8600 is the most powerful Core 2 Duo in the E series, however it's only a few MHz different from an E8500 (3.33 vs 3.16 respectively); hence you'll receive the same performance any how with the E8500. As the E8600 is the "best," most people sell it overpriced on eBay. You can pick up the E8500 for half the price of the E8600, and it's effectively the same in performance. I've found the E8500 on eBay for $25 without shipping, that's if your within the United States.

Once you've upgraded to the E8500, the next upgrade I'd look at if you're not interested in a new build is your GPU; but that is of course your decision, and a discussion for later.

All the best. :)

Thank you
I will update my BIOS right now, thanks for pointing that out. I noticed that on ebay they sell the CPU but without the fan/heat sink. Would i need to purchase a fan separately? or can i use the current fan i have on my pc? i assume there's a fan in there just taking a wild guess hahaha.

So E8500 would be best instead of the E8400, & E8600

i might end up having to buy the E8400 because I already sent an offer to a seller so if he accepts it then i'm going to have to go through with the purchase. Its new and comes in the box for $30.

If he doesn't accept it then i'll look into getting the E8500.

You don't need to purchase a new heatsink and fan, you can just use your current one. Haha you will have one, processors are never left exposed. So remember to remove the heatsink/fan (it's at the top or centre of your motherboard), pull the lever up, take out your current CPU and slot in your new one. Then push the lever back down, and reinsert your heatsink and fan. Don't worry it's actually a lot simpler than what it sounds. :D

E8500 would be ideal, however there is little to no difference between the E8400, E8500 and E8600. I only recommended the E8500 since it's similar in price to the E8400, and much more affordable over the overpriced E8600. The only difference between the CPU's are the mere MHz, which won't affect much. Hence it doesn't matter which one you go for, they're all close enough in performance and whichever you get, it'll definitely be an upgrade over your current CPU.

All the best. :)

Thank you very much Obnoxious! You definitely made things a lot more simpler. I was under the impression that I would need a new fan hahaha. Well in that case I can really dig deep on ebay/amazon for the CPU alone.

As far as the installation process go i'll try watching a few videos on youtube before attempting anything.

Thank you!!!

Haha not a problem at all, it was my pleasure assisting. I hope upgrading your CPU goes smooth, and I hope updating your BIOS was no issue either. Don't worry about replacing your CPU, it honestly is simple. :D

All the best! :)

is this normal? I installed the E8400 today along with the stock fan/heatsink that it came with. I had trouble installing the heatsink but i finally heard the click sound on all four after taking out the motherboard.

anyways the processor sounds a lot louder than my old one and here are the temps.. are they normal for a stock fan?

the fan/heatsink was never used so it came with the pre applied paste.
