Intel Core i5 Up to 4.0 GHz Stable?

So I have been wanting to get a CPU and I'm trying to gather all of the information I need to build a new system. I don't have the money or interest in going into water cooling. Apparently overclocking allows the CPU to run longer, but I am unsure of how exactly that happens, but it would definitely increase performance. I am planning on buying a 750W power supply either from Seasonic or Corsair depending on my budget, and I am planning on buying a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU cooler. I am interested in overclocking but am unsure if I can run 4.0 GHz stable on those specifications. It would be great if I could stay up to date on what better and more advanced CPU coolers there are out there, and see how that affects the potential range of stable overclocking.

4ghz on sandy bridge is a cake walk, so no worries there. The Hyper 212 Plus is a really good, cheap cooler. If you can find something bigger/better like a V6 GT, Noctua DH14, Megahalems (any), Archon, Zalman CNPS9900 Max (I found these on sale for like $30 once) you will get better cooling which will allow higher overclocks.

For your needs, 4-4.4ghz should be very doable on a Hyper 212 Plus though. They also released a new Hyper cooler, I think, which is supposed to be a bit better. Hyper Elite maybe? I forget.

Beyond that you can find a lot of good cooler reviews at various sites. Xbitlabs.com usually has some good reviews, or frostytech.com

Just for the record lets assume that you are talking about an i5-2500k and NOT an i5-750.

Most people get to 4.5ghz on the 2500k. The 212 evo is slightly better for a slightly higher price but the 212+ is still capable of ~4.7 if your cpu is up to it. Any higher really isn't worth the performance because of the extra cost of a better cooler.

Hi.
I have the 750 2 years now and some time ago I OCed it at 4 Ghz (200X20) with a CoolerMaster V8 cooler. My Temps are very good no problems so far even at great load.
