the 10-30% gain in performance with i7 is not for you little boyz/gmers/kids 10 to 30% means days in video editing, sound editing and 3d modeling... so the extra 200$+ are worth every penny

why is that running so hot on that clock? I have had my i7 920 at 4.4ghz and it only got as hot as 80c on megahalems.

I'm a big fan of the i7 platform, but I think that even the AMD guys will agree that there wasn't ever a question about the 920 dominating the $250-$300(and beyond) price point. I think it'd be a good idea to show some more mainstream price points where the competition really is.
For what it is, it's a well written article, Don. I think you did a great job comparing the closest offering to the i7 920 that AMD has to offer, I think a lot of people might want to see a $60-$160 AMD vs Intel processor shootout, *THAT* would be a great read. Keep it up :)

I am very glad to see the new photoshop benchmark finally implemented.

[citation][nom]Anonymous[/nom]Who really cares about a couple of seconds these days.AMD has the BIG advantage of price especially in Australia.i7 CPU start at approx $500.00 compared to Phenom II at $220.00Intel Motherboard to suit i& - $320 to $500 AMD MB $200 - $300Spending $1890.00 AU for an Intel i7-965 Core i7 CPU, 3.20 GHz compared to a Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition CPU, 3.2GHz $418.00 AUEnd of day performance difference - ah heck all! I'll save the $$$[/citation]

Yeah, AMD has been profiting hand over fist..........

OMG it's so unfair to compare the i7s to a Phenom II. The Core i7s should only be compared to AMD's imaginary products which are better matches.

Seriously guys, what the heck can they use? They picked a few Intel procs and picked AMD's best stuff. That's all they could do.

Thank you... I was reading all of the reviews and wondered why no one was pointing this out. Haha

Toms,
PLEASE stop putting that stupid Castrol popup on top of your pages. Whenever it expands it covers the whole page. I already use Castrol and I really don't see why computer type people would even care what oil is in their cars.

Phenom II is a fine processor for it's targeted market segment. Choice in a marketplace is always good. The Core 2s are grossly overpriced for now being Intel's low end. No price adjustments to them coming also. If you can snag a processor from MicroCenter like I did, it makes no sense to get the PII 955 or 965 when I can get a Core i7 for the same price or lower.

Absolutely agree...I just put together a Core i7 920 system. I went to MicroCenter and got the 920 for $199.99. At 199, even the best Phenom 2 can't touch the performance I get from my new rig.

I did the research and seriously considered getting the Phenom II 965, but couldn't justify the performance hit to save around 100$...

Just my 2 pennies....
