From a Business standpoint I think this makes total sense
‘’ We learned that Intel doesn’t plan to release a CPU faster than Quad core 9770 3.2GHz by Q4 2008.’’

Why not sit back and enjoy the lead…Intel is making all the money with no threat in sight.

If I were Intel I would secretly develop something new (well call it AMDkiller1), putting all manpower into the project and not mention anything to anyone. When AMD finally says ‘hey…looky here, we constructed the fastest processor ever’ Release the AMDkiller1 and destroy AMD forever.
-Intel- ‘OH… WELL.. we have this 4.5 GHZ sixty-four core , that runs on solar!… SURPRISE!’

My 2 cents

now for another post that's actually related to the subject.....

I can understand why intel has kinda stopped rolling forward with their business plan. Their only competitor is viewed by the general public and media as being "behind". And imo, AMD isn't behind at all. I mean sure, there are some better performing intel procs, but at what cost? most of the time it costs more overall on an enthusiast platform. But if you step back and take a good look at the entire industry it breaks down like this.

the high end procs that us geeks get horny over are likely more than we'll be able to use right now. and this is why...
you can't actually multitask as much as you wish you could.
even if you could/needed to. you'd be making enough money and be so busy that you wouldn't care and prolly just buy two pc's and a kvm switch. (well, after the customary week of installing and opening every program known to man on top of one another to 'test' your new pc, haha)

look at the rest of the industry. gaming graphic cards/drivers are behind the trend right now. most procs are ahead of the gaming curve. Sure you can have a tiny bottleneck. but it's usually not that noticable. if at all. a few fps on average from the mainstream to the high end. really. spend double or more on a better proc for a few fps? most people DON'T DO THAT! 😛 especially when the economy is in a slump... which brings me to my next point.

WHY SPEND TONS OF DOUGH WHEN THERE ISN'T A RICH MARKET?

you can own all the beach property on the west coast, but why build a million dollar house on it when 99% of your target market can only afford half a mil?

and a little further on the subject of where amd stands... there is a HUGE market for amd procs. I, and many others, don't need to squeeze every drop of performance out of everything i buy. there are some articles and studies that explain this, only they're titled "linux" rather than "amd"... point is... cost down=sales up when market=poor and minute performance advantages=null vs. price on the overall market.

to sum it all up. People in one of the largest markets (America) are currently poor. The *only* competitor is viewed as "behind" rather than right at pace with the rest of the market. And software has a lot of work to catch up.

eg: how long have 64 bit procs been out? how many of you run a 64 bit os on your 64 bit system?

anyway, that's my 2 cents, and that's why i think their business decision is a smart move and how i feel on the circumstances. and i'm tired... so i'll be off now. 😛

JK, you have no idea what Id do to "borrow" your Intel ID for just one day! I dunno what Im anticepating more for Christmas... Nehalem or Star Trek. And dude, knowin me, thats sayin a lot! :bounce:

I dont disagree with your overall statments, but dude, there are more driping rich people around than you can shake a stik at. I regularly have guys in their 50s and 60s contact me for estimates on building $50K+ chops. Ive been ridin since I was kneehigh to a grashoper and even I think thats way excesive. Nobody needs a $50K motorcycle, but that doesnt mean that nobody wants one. Im a few hours ride to Vancouver and theres a condo buildng there which is selling out fast and the top condo costs $20 mil. And it doesnt come with its own private island either. Your just upstairs from a 7-11 and a kebab shop! A fairly cheap fixer upper house there is $1 mil plus. Dont think for a minute that there is any beach proprety there that has a million dollar house on it... more like $5 mil. These guys arent gonna put a Celeron in their media systems. Their gonna go for the best. My own compnay is getin on its feet so were not at the point yet where we can aford to have the lights AND the heating on at the same time (!!!). But Ive got chops to design in 3D and photoshop and here I am just one weekend away from the Wolfie launch and Im still wonderng whether I should go with an 8GB RAM, twin socket 771 octopussycore. It isnt for playin games its for makin a livin! I need that power. That and the fact that Tim Allen is my hero!

haha, nice. and yes there ARE a bunch of rich people out there... but it's some 2% of all americans make 100g's or more a year.... that's a small percentage when you're selling to EVERYONE, and your market isn't that focused.

oh yeah, i noticed "CTRL-ALT-DE1337" that on your tag... look at the one shirt in my link below... i think you'll get a kick out of it. 😛

"Some are speculating that Intel is simply using this bug as an excuse to delay their 45nm CPUs in order to maximise profits on the 65nm CPUs still available. But considering that Intel's stock has dropped from nearly $28 to below $20 in the past month, it would not make sense for them to delay any of their 45nm products. Any way you figure it, it sounds like good news for AMD and bad news for Intel."

Pffft ... bad news for us you mean !!

The Wofies are out but what about the Yorkies then??

http://www.dailytech.com/Intel+Explains+45nm+Delays+Errata/article10362.htm

I think it is all about stock ... they don't want excess inventory.

I should add the local Q's here all went up in price ... the Q6600 nearly $20.

Doesn't help then the 9600 BE won't even OC past 2.6.

With little competition I'd expect Intel's prices to rise again.

Any comment?

Any company would prefer to continue selling old products for high prices than to make them obsolete by releasing newer, better products at the same price.

So long as AMD can't compete, it would only 'make sense' for Intel to ship products if the demand for the old ones was falling off or they were building up an inventory of the new ones that they need to sell.

WTF???Thunderman says the same crap in all his posts. He needs to come up with new lies.Does he lay in bed and pleasure himself to the thought of Intel going under?

I don't know about that, but I'm sure he gets off knowing how many people there are who's skin he can get under this easily.

If none of you remember when the preshott was out it was still outselling amd athlon64 offerings. Intel has huge marketing to go with them so they can do that I mean who here knows the intel jingle. Amd was never very catchy name it was just the cheaper alternative and nobody wants that. Intel probaby wont be pushing to get more speed out of their current lineup because with the economy slowing down they do they need to they should be more worried about having people buying processors then making the fastest one available. The issue with the 790fx boards is only when using ahci and with my involvment with servers Ive only seen it used once so I seriously doubt that any normal person using vista would have a problem with this. As for you people saying vista is bad and such these areguments have been there forever when windows xp came out when sp2 came out so on and so forth if you dont like it dont upgrade. Eventually your going to have to because it will loose support just like windows 2000. As well as for those of you who say these processors are fast enough, wtf are you smoking if a faster processor can encode quicker say for people who accually make money with their computers it will increase production and more more money so its better to have fast processors come out every few months. As well as those of you complaining about am2 lets bring intel into this on lets start with the jump to 775 which only brought dd2 compatibility, then the jump from the 915 chipset to the 945 which allowed for the use of dual core but the previous chipsets could do that then the jump from 945 to 965 to allow the use of conroe basic cores but not the extreme. Then after that x38 to use new memory and lets not forget about the x45 which will be out soon to use new yorkfield processor. So for all the 939 sockets could use all the 939 processors as with am2 which is backward compatible with am2+ so not a big change. But with intel you have to upgrade motherboards with each offering just to get use of the newer processors. Btw im not a amd fanboy my main system is a core 2 quad. Just all the misinformation being passed around is quite annoying.

just in case you all havn't noticed... ALL of the tech companies are down. and the dow dropped 450 points or something like that this morning. ibm, intel, etc. AMD actually went up since a week ago, it may or may not have something to do with them pushing their graphics card up a week. Nvidia is down almost 5%!!! wow. this is a sign of our terrible economy... not intel over amd or the other way around... they're all getting nailed guys. and here's a thought... if you guys want to help our economy... wait till the companies are down in stock, then buy all you can... they'll go back up sooner or later... and more americans will own the companies rather than the foreigners.... which=American economic power. yay! right?

but either way, they're all trying to cover their asses... and the difference with amd is... well, they're pushing through even though they have no money... intel, covering their butt to save money rather than pushing on in one of the BIGGEST markets in the world.... let me think like intel for a second...

"i'm intel, one of my biggest market's is plummeting into a recession. I think I'm going to hold on to my money for a little bit until I see where this is going to end up and i can make plans accordingly. but just in case the market comes back into play in a big way, lets have a backup plan, but don't announce anything"

and like i've said before, low to medium computer sales are up.

and i agree with the later part of what xnamerxx said... I like having a forward looking platform. Not many people want to buy an entirely new pc and drop WAY to much money to upgrade...

AMD is soo far behind its not funny , nearly a whole generation of nm behind .. I looked at AMD website and all there benchmarks at still at 65nm lol hhhhahaahah..

Intel are at 45nm now soon 35nm next year!

First.. AMD isn't a generation behind. Intel is expecting to ship less than 10% of their total processor shipments of 2008 at 45nm. (If memory serves, don't quote me on the percentage).

Second, it's 32nm, not 35. Then comes 22nm. I'm not sure what the half node is between 45 and 32 is off the top of my head.

AMD expects to have it's 45nm out in 2008, which will be fine.

fudzilla! What a laugh they do not know if they are scratching their watch or winding their asses. What a site that has started a flame war.

How is Fuad wrong?

His comments are merely a critique of Intel's current statements !

No-one is refuting what he / they said ... merely why!

Fuad's site could do with a bit of grammar checking ... but he often gets good inside knowledge. It's kinda the Eastern European version of the Inq !!

Someday, the OS will actually take advantage of the hardware available and that will be a grand day indeed. Today, we publish opinions with zeal for we believe we have a clue.

Verily, I say unto you, you will continue to buy new hardware to support bloated and poorly coded software, until that generation shall pass away.

yeah, that's why i run linux. 😛 64 bit support is leaps and bounds above anything else. manageing to do all the the other operating systems do (save for a few games) and do it faster and better in a more lightweight and better looking (imo) package.

onestar speaks the truth ... it is a poor gooey world we live in.

Microsoft has given us common terms of reference for communicating ... alas the giant is so big now it has swallowed all of the competition and effectively stopped all innovation.

It buys anything remotely competitive then closes it.

I pity the coders who produce quick slick products that run like a dog under the MS Bloated OS.

Microsoft is now causing more damage than good.

XP power users moving to Vista find they require a system with twice the power runs the same tasks half as fast.

No wonder the Penguins are breeding :)

Alas ... the analogy seems to be similar for the cpu world ... Intel gets bigger ... but can AMD be the penguin ??

i am a penguin in both senses of your analogy. amd + linux. f-windows. Get half of the top 10 games on linux only... MS will go into bankruptcy without drastic change... or just suing the crap out of "linux" which you really can't destroy, or just going after the game developers for some reason or another... which they will try, but ultimately fail at. personally, i would be happy with just a dual release... they can put it on windows... but linux will shine due to lower requirements and optimized code. and i don't doubt that it will be the primary OS used by people in the long run.... ms will fall into a legend as one of the last "software giants" things are changing people... write some e-mails to game developers and run linux... ultimately you'll shape the change with your actions. i've already sent out e-mails to game developers requesting linux support. 😛

The trick here is most are using directx not opengl. the microsloth thing. As long as most want directx support, there will be very little for opengl.
If linux can get a directx games to work, that might change it.
