Actually, whether one likes it or not, Intel is going to push BTX forward. As far as I can decode from Intel's BTX white paper, it gains in modularity, has the advantage of having all slots aligned [horizontally] (favours lateral active ventillation), inverts the expansion slots position (GPU chips will face up, radiating heat accordingly) by also inverting the whole MB, has a more versatile foot-print (scales up to server-like EATX & scales down to SFF) and, among other "improvements", addresses - favourably - cable cluttering (sic).

Intel has done a very thorough research (technology & economy wise), before coming up with this solution.
Contrary to intuitive thermodynamical solutions (hot air rises...), where a vertically-aligned slot layout would favour hot air rise, BTX form-factor chooses horizontal alignement for three main reasons:

a) It would be difficult to implement vertical expansion slots;

b) Passive "hot air rise" alone is not enough for effective cooling; it could even be counterproductive to set up a vertical active cooling solution, due to aerodynamic air-flow issues;

c) Versatility: "one size fits all" approach, from blade-servers to SFFs.

It's more than a gut feeling... but I don't like it... much.

Cheers!

Hi, there! (Have already mentioned we're at the antipodes of each other?) :wink:

Well, here's something I've never heard of before. Anyway, it won't replace Intel's BTX, that's for sure.

Cheers, [antipode] mate! 😀
