Intel or AMD?

Look for a 945 or 955, they have really come down in price. Or check out the 720 BE.

DDR2 is still competitive though, we're talking something like 2-3% difference between a DDR2 and DDR3 setup, it's almost not worth bothering about.

@ tisello

Now you are in the thick of the research - stay with it - and you will see your way through to the best solution FOR YOU!

It's about your needs now and in future - you can save on the ddr2 path, and way that against the gains of ddr3/socket AM3. Note that AM3 cpu's WILL WORK IN A AM2+/DDR2 mobo. (but AM2+ cpu's will not work in a AM3 mobo). Also FUTURE AM3 mobos will use the new chipsets coming probably Q4. AM3 platform is still rolling out. An AM3 cpu will work in tomorrows AM3 mobo. There has never been an upgrade path offered like this before - there are almost too many options. Think it through for you.

It gets a little crazy - slow down and work it out for you, not anyone else.

Well if he is gona wait that long, may as well wait and see how I5s perform lol....

not I3 tho, they are just rebrands

IMHO,get DDR3, since if they do continue with this backward compat CPU from AMD with DDR2/DDR3 and then DDR3/DDR4 you'd be future proof with DDR3 much more than DDR2

Not sure anyone will bother with DDR4 either, it's probably gonna go DDR5 like on the gpu market (yes i know amd did some gddr4 but they soon learned it wasn't worth it).

so true, my upgrade path went like:

A64 s939 -> more ram swap (2x 512 to 2x 1 gb OCZ gold to platinum )-> 6800GT to 7900GS -> i7 920 with 7900GS

thats in 5 years

and I'm planning to go to ATI 5xxx or maybe nvidia if they get their *** right.

well dropping another 400 dollar at least for a gfx right at this moment don't sound very productive.... I made the mistake once when I got my 6800 GT, as after about 3 months (I got it at the start of the summer) they released the 7800GTX and GT stuff that blew 6800 GT out of the water and then a little bit after came the 8800 line with DX10.....

I'm not making that mistake again with DX11 and ATI 5xxx and nvidia GT300 (if they have it lol) cards just around the corner.

unless someone wana pass me their old 8800GTS+ or something like that for 10 dollars roflmao.

is the unlocked multi that much of a thing for OCing on AMD nowadays??

I mean common, if the simple FSB and divider tricks don't work or are people just getting lazy with OCing and multi playing is all they do??

I would love to respond to your comment, but it's too difficult to type with my eyes rolled heavenward.

LOL - sadly, these AMD fanbois will ignore/rewrite history to suit their own holy image of the saintly company :).

Either that, or they don't remember 5 years ago. Probably the latter - many seem to have the attention span of a flea. Or Sasquatch. Or Sasquatch covered with fleas :sol: .

But then LGA775 didn't last as long as LGA775 lasted.

If a new chip that calls itself LGA775 can not work in all LGA775 motherboards without anything other than a BIOS flash then it is misleading to call the new chip LGA775.

If this happens 4 or 5 times then what you really have is 4 or 5 different sockets still being called LGA775. How long did each of those pseudo-sockets last as compared to AM2+?

i3 definitely aren't just rebrands - they are an entire new architecture. They may perform similarly to the old high end duos, but that doesn't make them a complete rebranding.

Honestly if it is only gaming (at high res and fps) that you want, then listen to randomizer and AMD girl (omg I can't believe I wrote that) here. What I am talking about here is of course with regards to the recommendations of the X3 720 BE and X3 710. Actually "theholylancer" has a bit of a point as well because you can almost guarantied OC the 710 as high (FSB or core frequency) as the 720 without the unlocked multiplier. Also comparisons have shown that once you get over 3.2-3.4 GHz core clock the speed on phenom II's has little effect (it's on Anandtech cpu section: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3559&p=13 ). Really overclocking the HT freq. and the memory controller speed can have a large effect - seen here vs. Core 2 architecture: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2009/05/11/overclocking-amd-s-phenom-ii-x3-720-be/6
These are not the perfect references, so I would like to hear some feed back. The main thing with buying any PC is your budget and your end goal. Always! keep this in mind, because more expensive is not always better in the long run, unless you are a rich SOB (which is cool by me, I'm just not one of those). If you want to read more check this out: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/264181-31-best-bang-buck-spend-system
Basically everyone knows that the i7 whoops the phenom II's a**, however when it comes down to bang for the buck it is a whole different question. Future predictions are hard to make, but if you live in the US and use Newegg (like a sensible person), then the combo saving on the phenom II are unbelievable. I wish we had them across the pond here in the UK. In this case saving anywhere from $200-400 (depending on RAM and MOBOs) will give you the cash for the ultimate worthwhile graphics solution (OC'ed 4890's in CF). This coupled with an overclocked phenom II X3 710/720 will give you excellent (60+ fps ) framerates in the most demanding games @ 1920x1200 res, and playable fps in games @ 2500 x 1600. There are of course downsides though, like lack of dual AMD and Nvidia support. However, as Nvidia are seldom better bang for the buck (sometimes they are though), and therefore if you are in a budget then they are not usually a wise choice. If you intend to play on a 24 inch 1920 x 1200 monitor then I recommend 4850 X2 or 2 x 4850's (4770's if you can find them under $100) in CF on a 790GX/X/FX board as best bang for the buck in most games. It will no doubt beat a single 4870 or 4890 by a long shot and provide the performance you need at that resolution for ~ $200 - not bad at all! If you do not believe me then at least read Proximon's comments as he indisputably knows what he is talking about. Long time since I have written here, so hello again to Randomizer, Helloworld98, gkay09, shortstuff_mt and xthekid! Wish you guys the best and keep up the good work!

btw jimmysmitty and fazers_on_stun have good points too; so keep this in mind- there is no point in company loyalty - only performance and value per $!

That is correct fazers, the victors always write the history. :)

Apparently you share George W. Bush's concept of of both victory and history

So if i want the most "bang for the buck" i should choose AMD Phenom II 720 x3?

But if i want the best preformance for a reasonable price i should choose i7 920?

All dependant upon the mobo company. Most high end mobo companies would support them till at least the end of the 65nm Core 2s and some would even support them all the way to the 45nm Core 2s.

Its not only a simple BIOS update either or any of the low end AM2+ mobos could support every Phenom/Phenom II out there yet not all can due to the low end voltage regulators. Remember that if you go cheap on a mobo you limit the actual CPU support. Plenty of AM2+ mobos don't support above a 9750 Phenom.

I could even list quite a few LGA775 mobos with the 945P chipsets (that are roughly 4-5 years old now) that support every single Core 2 out there but meh, I don't feel like pulling them up.

And still the mobo maker will make the decision in the end. There are also plenty of AM2+ mobos that still do not support a Phenom due to a lazy mobo maker not willing to update the BIOS. But ones like Asus and other high end ones tend to update the BIOS all the time or at least till the end of the mobos usefullness. My current P5K-E can support every LGA775 from the original Prescott based Pentium 4s all the way to the highest end Core 2 Quad @ 45nm and it uses a P35 which according to a lot of people was going to end at the 65nm Core 2 Quads......
