Oh wait, I forgot, you are too busy trying to fight a war in Iraq, displacing millions daily for your benefit
Ok, hold on just a minute there cowboy. Just exactly how has the US benefited from that war :?: Oh, you must be talking about all that oil to repay all of the billions that we spent. Well we never got it. Any other ideas :?:

Nice try there , diamond stealing whiteboy. I never voted for bush or the war. I screamed at pro supporters it was a stupid move when they did it.
And my family came here after the indian wars ,just before the us stopped allowing mormon emigrants.
You is an ignant whitey ,isnt ya?

Yeah, I also never voted for the Afrikaaner government that installed apartheid. I was in primary school with black kids, but you will still classify me as a white racist.

But, I'll stoop to your level, and still call you a bullying two faced yank who will do anything to better your wealth, even if it means the demise of others.

PS. Diamonds don't do anything for me. You on the other hand have probably bought a 'white' south african diamond...

Hehehe....I think that was the intial plan...Guess it didn't work out, and now its one MAJOR clean up operation

Aren't they now trying Iran followed by North Korea, and finally making a stop over at Syria 😀

Feed a man and he eats for a day; Teach him to fish and he will eat every day.

But surely you have to teach him to fish, before you teach him how to research dietary and nutrional information on the web

Syria will probably fall in line after that. Maybe later we do Korea, if China doesn't get them under control. So many countries so little time.

Can they access farming info via the web?
How about hygene info?
Maybe some info on diet and nutrition.
Will it help them aquire skills to seek more gainful employment?
Will it connect them to a world with the resources to help?
Will it give them a voice as a people?

yes ,and more, yes.

Feed a man and he eats for a day; Teach him to fish and he will eat every day.

i am an american that has worked all of the world and i can not believe how stupid and naive most all americans are. how are they going to acess the web when they have no phone, no wireless, no anything. this is such a stupid answer.. how about giving facts and your experience and going to these places before you say anything. how are they going to get gainful employment when there is no work and no manufacturing. most of these countriesd have to import everything they have. we need to help provide jobs and then they will be able to educate there children and might make there country a better place. giving people things never accomplished anything. your entire statement is stupid and naive......

Well we differ on that. I think there is at least one child who can make an idea like this mean something to his country men,and use it to bring a better standard of living.

Maybe we should go into why africa is in such a bad state. Not all of them have it so rough even america has its poor and forgotten; and we spend alot of time aiding africa, when americans go hungry.

no american dose not have poor and hungry you are so stupid. we have nothing like this and you trying to compare just shows how stupid you are. the vast majority has it rougher than you can ever understand before you make stupid statements like this get out of your climate controlled life and go see what it is really like and talk to these people and see what they need!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how about giving facts and your experience and going to these places before you say anything.
I for one am not going there. There are no restaurants, the people are poor and it's just plain dangerous. Oh, and there's no internet access.

I take it you've been here before :?:
Hell no, but I have been reading your posts.

Edit: I should say PCnut and beerandcandy and your posts

I know first hand; you dont deny there are poor in america sleeping under bridges when youre standing among them. Thats just suicide.
All joking aside, that's why I always give my money to Feed The Children US side. Not that I don't believe in helping the world, but I believe that the children in the US should come first. They seem to get forgotten. Also, Feed The Children have a very high percentage, of every dollar, that actually gets to the people in need and not eaten up in "expenses". They did have some stealing by employees several years ago, but they stamped it out quickly.

This thread was an interesting read...

From what I see here there are 2 sides(I choose to ignore the stupid polemic between those who support Intel and those who support the consortium and concentrate only on the topic regarding the effect that this program may have on children’s life): the one who claims that this effort is useless because the real needs of these children are very different, and the ones who claim that this is a positive thing because it can trigger a leap in knowledge and access to information.

I fail to see how this program can be useless, however I think that both sides are right… those countries have many problems and complex issues and they will not be solved over night, what those people need is a massive economic and political support for their ongoing problems, however this program may be one of the many steps needed to help these countries.

Although laptops will not solve all the problems they will definitely help if only a little. Access to information through internet and the power of these computers can really make a difference in some cases and this can only be a positive thing. So I think we can say that this is a very good thing and that it may also trigger a reaction from those international forums that are able to offer solutions for the others problems these countries face with.

INTEL will always be Intel

as good as the cause they try to show. A shadow of opportunistic Giant who just want to eliminate competition in all areas. We can't blame them, because to them they are doing "GOOD". It's similar with some countries who hide in promoting "GOOD" to cover some bad agenda in developing countries.

Why have it now? Why Intel didn't help OLPC? This is reality, the rich, the powerful can do evil by hiding it with "GOOD" intentions.

I'm in a Third World Country. Most schools rely on donated computers that can't even run most need applications. Windows is too expensive to purchase.

The idea is really great because it would help children learn and in the future land in jobs that would improve their situation

Has anyone here ever spent any time in these third world countries and work with these people?? In something other than government sponsored trip or a vacation. I am lucky enough or some would say unlucky to have work in some of these countries and talked to the people that actually live and work in these countries. Have any of you people?? I can tell you one thing that a laptop is the last thing these children need. how are they going to use it when they do not have power or it is only on for a few hours a day??? All this is, is a publicity stunt by everyone and a feel good about your self project. When I see projects like this it makes me laugh and then I see people talking about it and argue that have never left the USA and really know nothing about how conditions are in these countries. I can think of a lot of ways to help these people other than something like this. How about spending money to help build factories so the people can work… Instead of giving them something. That will last about one day until they sell them to buy food or something like this. We are talking about children that will take a piece of hard candy and lick it a few times to make it last for several days instead of putting it in there mouth like we do they hold it in hand and lick it and then wrap it back in paper.

There is nothing wrong with Intel, AMD or any other company or individual making money and a profit. This is all any of us want to do. I work because I make a profit my company pays me for the service I provide them so this is my profit. If I help the company make a profit I will make more money and this is what I and anyone that has ever had to work for a living wants to do. I was not born rich and have work and struggled to get where I am nothing was given to me and I do not think it should have been. Just like we do not need to give these people a stupid laptop PC. Need to help provide jobs so they can do what they want and need to do on there own. Do you people have any idea of the poverty and conditions 99% of these people live in??? I am not talking about the poor the governments show us or the reporters it is so much worse that you can ever imagine. Things we take for granted like water, power, phone and internet is a luxury for these people. I think before any of you people criticize any of these companies or the USA you should kiss the ground you walk on because these companies making a profit is what this great country was built on. That and freedom of choice. You people do not know how spoiled we are in USA..

Re that a "laptop is the last thing these children need", let me point out simply that I don't want you making my life decisions for me.

And an individual 12 yr old child somewhere, regardless of where, does not want you to come in and make their life decisions for them. They might need some help, but it isn't up to you to choose whether an individual gets an opportunity to move up in the world via computers. It's up to them.

This is a "paternalistic" attitude -- that you know best, and other people are to follow your decisions!

Stop confusing two different issues together. They can use food and computers (if they want), just like you and I!

Actually, instead of "help if only a little", knowledge and information have a different track record than that!

They are revolutionary, and have overwhelming impact.

That's just the track record, around the world.
