I just updated my MacBook Pro from 10.10.1 to OS X 10.10.2 (final release, not a beta...) After rebooting, I no longer have any options to change resolution on my external monitor aside from 4K or 1920x1080 (it's a 4K Asus monitor.) I used to be able to pick from maybe a dozen resolutions between those two before the update... 1080 looks like cartoons on this, full native 4K is way too small to read. All the interpolated options are gone. (Yes, I know to push the option key before selecting the "Scaled" button in the display control.) I used it use 2400x1600 or something like that and it was awesome. I can't roll back to 10.10.1 either.

Any thoughts on that one? Is this a common thing? I'm connected via Thunderbolt, not HDMI. Yes, I know it's only 30Hz and I'm completely fine with that.

Well if apple says it's like that... than you have to follow what they say. Apple in general offers very little range for customizing.

I would suggest you try and plug it through a different port. Or maybe a driver?

I found this:
Set the resolution for a connected display
If you have more than one display, additional resolution options are available.

After the display is connected, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, then click Display.

Press the Option key while you click Scaled to see additional resolutions for the second display. Then select a scaled resolution option for the second display.

hope it helps

Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

And Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761

after doing these steps you should have your resolution options back

I had mentioned in the initial post that these resolutions are no longer showing up in the list when I push the option key (as they did before.)

The built-in screen presents the standard retina options and has been working just great. It's the external (via DisplayPort) 4K monitor that used to have a dozen scaled options between 4K and 1080p that no longer appear. They were there and working in 10.10.1 before the update last week.

I haven't tried safe mode but I will when I go home tonight... Is that a guess or is there some evidence that loading up with just the core KExts could make some changed driver issue go away?
