Hi, I have a 1Gbit/s connection at my place, where my desktop is connected via an ethernet cable. The problem I have is that a lot of times my connection seems to be limited to around 90Mbit/s while downloading (I've tried different internet speed tests and they all give the same results), but if I unplug and replug the ethernet cable on my PC, when the connection comes back, it works at around 800Mbit/s, which is the desired speed, but it slows down back to around 90Mbit/s after a while. Any ideas what might cause this?

Solution
Yeah, bad cable or bad wall plate connections is the first place to start. That is usually easy to validate by replacing the cable. You want a 22 to 24 GA all-copper round cable TIA certified cable.
Since connection speed is constantly automatically negotiated it can be affected by poor quality connectors caused by oxidation or dirt on the RJ45 connectors on the cable or in the RJ45 jacks. Even poor quality ethernet patch cables can cause intermittent speed problems.
