[citation][nom]applerocks[/nom]Why do the iPad haters troll this web site posting the same junk over and over. They have sold 2 MILLION of the things.[/citation]

Britney Spears sold 2 million CD's, doesn't mean its quality stuff because of sales count.

I don't see them as mutually exclusive products. OK if you need a smartphone you need a smartphone and an iPad is simply not going to fit that bill. The iPad is all about screen size, you can read off it comfortably at an acceptable distance. The iPhone (or any smartphone) is all about maximizing functionality while maintaining a "pocket-able" size and I'm sorry but whatever wonderful screen they throw on the iPhone it is not going to overcome the limitations of a small screen size.

I honestly see the two diverging going forward. Yes the iPad apps are firmly grounded in iPhone design because up until two months ago that's all developers had to work with. That's going to change as developers take advantage of all that screen real estate and write specific apps that really only work well on the iPad.

But to the original question, since I own an iPad and an iPhone I can honestly say, if I had to choose one over the other, that the iPhone is the easy choice.

"I am sure Apple intended to market both products as complementary from the get-go."
You just don't get it. Apple never intended to market the iPad, they were bullied into it by the media. The obvious cripling of the features list is proof. And proof denying faith, Hype doesn't exist and Apple disapears in a cloud of logic.

The iPad did not make sense from the start, there was not great enough of a gap between the handhelds and the macbooks in both price and feature list to market a product that would not hinder the other product lines. So rushing out a weak iPad solved the problem, the media spared Apple and the Macheads waited in line to get their new testament straight from the Apple store.

Now Apple shows what it realy was working on and as much as I hate to admit... it is great. its a new iPhone with more battery life, HD movie capability, a LED flash, a second camera and a faster processor. they even threw in multi-tasking for free.

Make no mistake, this is not a mistake.

I know it's not the point of your article but you make the iPhone 4 sound like's it's some magical device that has somehow changed the industry. Fan boy much?

I'm Ipad owner and I don't want buy a rich-features phone. It may not pick my pocket but I can put it in my bag replaced for my netbook. Hahah truly it kill my netbook. I don't touch my netbook anymore. Anything done with my huge PC and a light iPad.

this article's premise is ridiculous. First off the size of the ipad really makes it a different sort of device. The real problem is that You are saying apple shot itself in the foot by making a good product and a great product hat compete. yeah they really shot themselves in the foot they should have held back and not made such desirable products that share some similarities. Your pretty creative in coming up with ways of criticizing apple.

I have a phone, I have a Blackberry supplied by work. I can tether both to my wifi iPad. ATTs coverage ducks and that is a pure D fact. Now as far as dumping on the iPad..... One person can always question another's rationale in a purchase. IE: You bought a Ninja? Wouldn't a Rebel cost less and do the same thing? I am not an Apple fanboy. I have never owned a Mac. I have an 80gb iPod 5th generation and an iPad. The user interface is the strength of both devices. It took Apple to nudge us from the command line to the mouse and GUI. The iPad is another interface transformation. My laptop usage has plummeted since my acquisition of the iPad in early April. I have to admit, I went into Best Buy that day to ridicule the iPad. I made the mistake of picking it up and using it. A Kindle or Nook is $260. A Sony touch is $300. So for double the price of an ereader, you get color plus many other capabilities. E-ink is not that big of an eye saver. I am qualified to say this because I have a Sony touch. The e-ink is slow to refresh. Most people browse the web and read email. iPad has that covered. Yes, there are the annoyances with the lack of flash, but that issue is not as bad as it may seem. iPad is instantly on. I have my service manuals on iPad. I have spreadsheets, power points, and docs on iPad. It works for me. I am looking forward to a tablet with more capability and less restrictions...it is yet to be found. Don't hand me the wacom pen laptops with a thin veneer over standard Windows. The iPad interface is brilliant. The interface is built ground up for fingers and a touchscreen. Aftermarket companies can supply a stylus for a capacitive touchscreen if you can't get along without it.
If you don't want one, don't buy it. Both Apple proponents and detractors need to get a grip and get off the religious war. I bought the thing because I saw it fitting what I need how I need it. My eyes suck too much to be reading this website off a phone. Get real.

Apple reminds me of Harley Davidson motorcycles, Harley's are all about image, they are by no means the best performing, or value for money, or use the latest technology but people still buy them in their hordes just because of the name/image behind it.

Same goes with apple products

i love the last line regarding netbooks. i would like to have an iPhone or iPad, just to experience it but for a person who counts his pennies, they are just luxury and form trying to get the functionality of netbooks.
simply, with my money, i will get a simple phone and a netbook, though, one of which should have 3g and which is not from AT&T.

I still yet to see the reason to have a smart phone. the data plan per month is so outrageous when wifi is everywhere now. i dont think it makes sense to force people into a data plan when they could just use wifi.

... there is no shot in the foot... iPad & iPhone haz different target auditorium... and some nerd will have them all, no mater the cost...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndkIP7ec3O8
... some older people, who may have problems seeing haz no use for iPhone's little screen... a little kid is not yet responsible, to do a 2 year contract... i know, that the next iPhone will be in my pocket soon... but for my mother, who likes to read an is 50 now, i will get an iPad...

I've owned the iPad since the day it was released and my Macbook Pro has sat in it's bag all except two of those days. Now, I DO have an iMac that I do my heavy production work on and no, my iPad can't replicate that (to it's credit Aperture doesn't run nearly as well on my MBP either). That said, I also have an iPhone and for my uses they don't compete at all. I will pre-order the iPhone 4 as soon as I can 😉 The iPhone is my phone and the iPad is my portable computer/TV 😉 -BTW I'm totally biased and an Apple fanatic!

I'm convinced Wolfgang Gruener knows what he writes is idiotic, but just does it to irritate people.

It's a pity you can't see what articles he writes just to avoid them. Their heavy-handed, as he somehow thinks he's the vox populi, without any apparent insight or knowledge. He somehow knows what we want more than we do.

I need to check the author before I read the article and say to myself "What idiot wrote this trash?". I don't know why I even have this question, it's always the same answer.

On the one hand I'm not a fan of apple and haven't been for a long time, and this article is ridiculous and almost makes me think tom's is being paid under the table to run this tripe. On the other hand i don't understand some of the baseless animosity towards the refresh of the popular iphone product line. They update and improve the iphone and some of you hate on them for doing it? I have an HTC HD2 and love it and won't be owning any apple products, but i'm also not going to blast them for updating their product lines. I just heard toyota is coming out with a 2011 camry... jerks...

Well for me,i bought the iPad because i wanted something that i can play e-books well on it and also a great web browser,music/video player and i am satisfied with it.
As for iPhone 4,although its great,i still like my iPad because for my usage,3.5" screen is small and i rather work on a much bigger display.,IMO iPhone would be good for taking pics, talks,SMS and pretty much everything that a "PHONE" does, but i prefer iPad for web surfing, watching movies and playing music
But that's my idea :)

Soooo....
Sell 2 million iPads with no multitasking and then release phone with the same chip but an OS that allows it to multitask?
If I was an iPad customer but wasn't allowed the option of having the new OS I would be mad as hell.

Frankly I dont like APPLE and its Marketing(effective for the masses and computer illiterate). I am waiting to see how the Microsoft Zune HD cel phone will work out. I do wish Msft would actually focus on content and apps for the Zune HD because I see so much potential in it yet its not marketed well. I highly doubt that its even marketed 10% when compared to APPLES Ipod, Ipad, I-touch and Iphone.

Otherwise this would be a great competitor since it has an Nvidia ION2 and a good processor to match it with.

Yawn, yet ANOTHER damn apple-tard written apple puff-piece on a site whos majority of viewers don't give a crap about crippled, underperforming and locked down products.

1) Great article (and i'm actually an apple hater)
2) this phone...nggg....is....arrghhh....*grits teeth* ...it's good. like REALLY good.
3) As soon as it hits Europe (where we are not weighed down by AT&T crap, i'm going to start looking into how i can get me one.
4) yes, apple have won me over (ONLY FOR THIS DEVICE) by using absolute BRILLIANT design standards...the 5MP camera could be better though (look at any Samsung)

its not called zune HD cell phone, its called windows phone 7 and it is AWESOME,dell, asus,LG and samsung already have models running the new mobile OS and to be honest from what i have seen they are much more impressive than this new iPhone but we will have to wait till year's end for those phones, the new android devices coming out are also very solid and either on par or better than the iphone as well, needless to say froyo will be a major game changer when it comes out officially, the mobile landscape is going to change drastically before the year is over, the iphone 4 is decent looking but the competition from android and Windows Phone 7 this time is actually up to par

"even if you don’t like Apple products for whatever pointless reason" Apple Fanboy Alert! There are many good reasons why people dislike Apple - proprietary hardware, closed system, ITunes...... I am a geek but the Iphone just gives me a headache.

"you have to admit that the new iPhone 4 is the phone most of us would want" Apple Fanboy Alert! There are at least 5 smartphones already available that are superior and many more on the way. Anyone who is not a brand zombie would know this.

"So, what is it--besides the larger screen--that makes the iPad attractive? Not much." Apple Fanboy Alert! Everyone who is not a Fanboy has been saying this for the past five months. It is just a large screen Ipod, nothing else, not the "revolution" that some claim. But fanboys are only now becoming aware of this because of the Iphone4? Like all the other superior smartphones out there are not sufficient to break through the blinkers eh?

I am a PC user but I think people who say experience of surfing in iPhone (which I have one and frankly I think is the killer app for iPhone to succeed in the first place) is no different from iPad, probably shouldn't have a TV larger than 24"

Razor thin design and a build structure that eliminates that phrase ‘form follows function’. Now we know form and function can co-exist in harmony if you put some effort into your product.
Er, "form follows function" does not exclude form and the iPhone4 is a perfect example for execution of that idea (Bauhaus, I think.). Granted, the phrase has often been cited to excuse lame designs.

I have been looking at a friend's iPad for a while, sometimes in envy sometimes thinking it's simply too big for me. Waiting for the iPhone 4 was the natural conclusion and I am glad Apple didn't put some artificial limits on it (from what I can tell). For reading and stuff like that, the iPad is still better (bigger) and not everybody has perfect eyesight to see all the detail on the iPhone 4. I just need it to fit in my pocket, and that's the iPhone. ;-)
