For me the iPhone 4 is the go but for my near computer illiterate wife the iPad is a perfect replacement for a home PC and will do everything she uses a computer to do.

[citation][nom]salgado18[/nom]I'm an iPhone game developer, and we just got an iPad. Being honest, and refering to another opinion on the site, it is an amazing game console: all the power and usability of the iPhone with a huge screen! RTS's are just great, just like most games well ported to it.But, apart from that, sorry, but smartphones and netbooks do everything else better. And the iPhone 4 is better in all ways except from a huge screen (worse for gaming, but amazing for the get-go).Even then, I don't see the end of the iPad, because of it's great gaming potential, and especialy after reading news that quoted Nintendo and Sony aiming at Apple as their rival.[/citation]

Oh do tell about your experience with the iPad as a gaming device. In fact, PM me so we can talk.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree this is an impressive piece of hardware. The only complaits I can raise is the cost and the carrier (but both of those negatives, individually and especially together, are enough for me to not consider the iPhone a viable option)

Couldn't one circumvent the AT&T plan for the most part by choosing the smallest data plan then set up a 4G WiMAX device (with a wireless ISP)with a wireless router running off of 12V in the users vehicle using the wifi signal instead for the majority of the data?
I know that 4G WiMAX devices have fairly good coverage and better bandwidth with lower ISP costs (say about $480 per year for unlimited bandwidth). Also ones laptop, netbook, desktop would utilize the same wifi router signal. Most people have their vehicle fairly close to them.

Not impressed with Iphone4. It really needed to be a killer umm phone. What we got was a pretty vid cam function and glass case...geez don't drop it for sure now! Must have wifi, and then maybe it may work..think Jobs demo lol..."Oh geez everyone in starbux get off ur puters and shut ur phones off please i need to use my Iphone4 Face Time!!" Let's..umm..face it, that's a joke for now until it can become truly wireless. It's also according to what i understand 3G not 4G like the new Droid phones. To be honest, I have no idea what Apple was thinking but they must be getting very worried about Google's Android phones. That's the only explanation I think of for this piece of wonderfully looking hardware.

AT&T and Apple are really a perfect marriage if you think about how they both focus on sexing the hell out of an inferior product to the uninformed masses. I go back and forth trying to figure out which one is the biggest shylock.

I must be crazy to post a comment about an i-product with the rabid lovers/haters. I have no loyalties, but I resent the comment about the i-phone being the obvious choice, if i could afford it. That just sounds like snobbery. I can afford it thank you, but I chose the HTC Desire after I compared specifications, it is simply better on paper, and I love it. I did consider the current i-phone, but it did'nt add up.

I have a use for the iPad because I've always wanted a functional tablet pc that reminds me of Star Trek. But I use Android phones, so I have no use for an iPhone. With wifi tethering on my Droid I don't have an issue with data plans either, so the iPad works better with Android than it does with the iPhone if you ask me.

The iPad was touted as this awesome device... "It's what a tablet always should have been," they said. WHAT? Did they miss that thing called the iPhone? It IS the iPad... with a PHONE in it. We had it right in front of us, just no one slapped a display on it large enough to call it a tablet. The iPad never had a market and it's merely fooled the masses into purchasing something they already own. It shows that makeup and a new dress will only enhance the beer goggle effect. Here we are with the iPhone 4... It's still just an iPhone people. Overall it will be 90% of the same thing with 100% of the price. Welcome to being fooled AGAIN. I bought TWO Evo's over the weekend, one for me and one for my girlfriend. We love them and have no need to listen to, and certainly not fall for, the Apple hype that keeps selling us the same product OVER AND OVER again.

[citation][nom]arael[/nom]Even if you are not a nerd, and even if you don’t like Apple products for whatever pointless reason, you have to admit that the new iPhone 4 is the phone most of us would want[/citation]
well i want a n97

"Sorry but no.
Most apple products are outdated tech advertised to be the latest stuff and put in shiny cases. I'd take an HTC Desire over this any day of the week."

Listen to yourself, the new iPhone is not precisely that, but any preference is respectable. And it will be nice to notice the difference product by product even from the same maker.

Nice article, I just want to say that I see the market both the iPad and the iPhones were created for. The iPad looks very similar in specs to the iPad but they work for different uses. Some people, and I mean a lot, don't need a laptop but appreciate the iPad screen. Photographers, graphic artist wanting to show their portfolio, sketching for prototypes, presentations for manny business people, hospitals, marketing, etc. On the other hand the iPad is good for young and older people and for manny task inside the house including cooking. The iPhone wins hand down for portability and functionality. This is the choice for everyday moving around with your hands free.

But I want something in between! a larger iPhone or iTouch but smaller than the iPad. I hope the second iPad incarnation will provide an option.

Well I do not care for the Iphone. Really, it is the iphone 4.0 which will cost me 3000$ over 3 years (yeah in canada it is 3 years contract) vs the ipad wich will cost me only 500$ for the same 3 years of usage.

I do not use that much my cell phone and really I find the screen really too small for me.

I think that the people who think an iPad has no use are the most tech hardcore people. Yeah the Ipad is a luxury item but I really like it and I use it. The iphone, not so much...

"even if you don’t like Apple products for whatever pointless reason, you have to admit that the new iPhone 4 is the phone most of us would want"

I only have perfectly valid reasons for hating Apple products, and many of us want things like the HTC Evo.

"A sense of how hardware can beautifully work with software and other hardware"

yeah, as long as the 'other hardware' also has an apple logo on it... (this would be my first perfectly valid reason)

The iPad and iPhone are aimed at totally different markets: One is quite definitely a phone, one is a netbook/tablet/laptop which is going through an evolutionary phase. Apple nearly always down-play its hand with the first couple of product iterations and then bangs a Royal Flush on the table once everything feels right. Expect Apple to up the ante significantly with iPad II or III. You will see a mature product, with phenomenal computational capabilities, a fabulous screen and (nearly) everything you'd want in a highly portable computer. Whereas, the iPhone will always first and foremost be a phone. I have friends that are doctors and artists who see great professional potential in the iPad which just doesn't fit a phone model. In the years to come they will leave the house with a tablet and a phone...laptops relegated to cluttered cupboards and desktops indoors which only get booted for serious work or serious gaming. The positive environmental impact these smaller and less demanding of recyclable raw materials will be felt quite quickly.

A price must be paid to bring about these changes and (wealthier) Apple customers will help bring this goodness to everyone as prices and material use is driven down competitively. So, don't knock them. Since the dawn of the industrial revolution it's always been the whimsical aspirations of the middle-classes who have driven up standards of living (for those fortunate enough to indulge whilst turning a blind eye to the injustices which make it so).

Some of you here may well scoff at Apple but its particular dogma has driven a wedge into your lives one way or another. Even if that meant you simply clicked on a news link about a company and product/subject that you will rage against regardless of its merits.

I use my iphone primarily for internet on the fly and watching movies when I'm bored and don't feel like using my power guzzling pc or tube tv. That's about all the iphone is usefull since they discontinued my service.

Wow this is the most offensive thing I have read here on toms... Most of us would buy the iPhone 4 if we had the money? no no no... A big group of people think that form follows function... I used to go through a new phone every two months until I got the g1. I can sure as hell afford the iPhone and other phones but they don't do what I need them to do, text excellently and not drop my calls. Pointless reasons? hmm its pointless that I dislike a company that insults anyone that doesn't use its own products? I'm through with reading this website. I personally dislike the use of vulgar words but I feel this article deserves it. Go fuck yourself toms.

Yeah but does it Blend? Stick it in a blender! hahaha go to youtube and type in "iphone does it blend" for a quick laugh

Ya sorry guys, I remember what it was like being poor. Sucks you can't afford toys like the iPad.

Even if you are not a nerd, and even if you don’t like Apple products for whatever pointless reason, you have to admit that the new iPhone 4 is the phone most of us would want, as long as we can afford it and a current 2 year contract is nearing its end

Well I say screw you Wolfgang Gruener, way to insult your readers. Just because some one doesn't like apple products doesn't mean they don't have a good reason.

"if you don’t like Apple products for whatever pointless reason"

I don't even know where to begin with this statement.. hahahaha

If you got the money its Nice to have one and still if you are a busy person and you want to organize its a must have(or buy another product).
