We've seen video call available in phones since 2003, when the first 3G devices were released, and do you know why it isn't popular? Because doesn't work well. Facetime would be impossible to use over AT&T's 3G, so they made WiFi a requirement. And tests I've seen on the net show that it works really poorly. Frankly, its choppy as hell...
- This isn't a new idea, its just a bad idea. And that's why Apple's the only one trying to do it. And they didn't even create some new impressive compression method or anything to back the idea. It runs like hell.. and is a gimmick.

For the camera... its got a tiny lense and takes 5MP pictures. I realize that for a lense that size going to 8MP isn't going to improve quality much, since software needs to filter additional noise, but as seen in the Nexus One and HTC Incredible, it does help to create more crisp pictures! The flash on this thing seems good, but the lense is NOT capable of taking quality low light pictures. Current phones with 8MP cameras and dual LED flash prove this. 720P video recording is a standard feature for new smartphones as well, although I'll admit that the framerate on Apple's iPhone 4 is better for now.
- If we were in a camera tech forum, and someone suggested that the iPhone4 would take "high quality low light photos", they'd be laughed at. Its a ridiculous statement that only a fanboy would make.

When Samsung, HTC, Moto, or Nokia make a crap device I say so. I just slammed Moto on a few. This is just an incremental update.... and basically a device inferior to other high end smartphones current in the wild.

I love how everyone tries to find a weakness in apple, something they did wrong, something they didn't think about... but they must be doing something right, their phone is their phone to beat for the last 3 years

I'm sure thats what apple wants you to believe but any one who knows anything about anything knows that is BS, apple products are for the style conscious not the tech savvy, just compare the specs to the competition and you will see.

[citation][nom]jgutz2006[/nom]The main point of this is that with a little patience and work, you can use the iPad to its potential without paying Apple Royalties[/citation]
Or I could buy a tablet that is just a fast, thin & stylish and allows me to drag & drop my original AVI files.

For me its not about the hardware, per se, I have a library of previously acquired content and software. Imagine Windows 7 coming out but they say that your $685 Photoshop CS4 disk is no longer compatible and you have to get a new one, that is exactly how I would feel about buying a tablet, I would want it to be able to run a selected list of my software.
I'm not talking power-apps here, anything with real number crunching but if i have something I am familiar with and works how I want it too, I should be able to use it also.
For years I have had a thing for Winamp and even though it is used alongside WMP and iTunes I still like it and still use it, so why can't I put Winamp on my tablet?
I am trying to learn new languages and have got the very reasonable Rosetta Stone and a tablet would be ideal for taking with me, but can I install my software from the CD onto the iPad? Well, I can't even attach a DVD to the iPad, so thats out of the question.
MS Office, well, there we are, my other half is doing an MBA and I am proofing her dissertation, as well as reading it I would like to be able to edit also. Will the iPad allow me to install MS Office so I can edit as well as view? Well again I can't even install from a CD.
Even something as simple as installing my USB printer and printing out a nice photo would be off the cards unless every printer driver was made available via the App Store.

In fact unless any of the software is something I get from the App Store the answer is no. All said and done there is probably $5000 of software that is not "power-user" stuff but convenient software that I could use on the go on a tablet. Every single one is now wasted unless I can install on a Windows tablet, or a Linux or Android tablet that can offer some sort of compatability.

The cost of an iPad versus the other tablets is inconsequential compared to the financial hit of discarding and replacing all my software and the inconvenience of not being able to use my existing video content. But to then charge me more to do so is criminal.

[citation][nom]fulle[/nom]If you disagree with me, give reasons.[/citation]

a NERD wants a device that is very flexible so they can tinker and customize it the way they want. the iphone is not that because of how crippled and restrictive it is. one reason i will never get an iphone myself is itunes. i would never let that crappy program pollute my PC

I rely on my boost prepay which runs me about 20 a month, and tether in a pinch to get my email through a hack.

I use broadband at home and refuse to take home work. If you want to work all the time, get the iphone. otherwise, enjoy a 28" hanns g for less than i phone after the first month.

The Ipad is for a person who likes an Iphone but wants more. Iphone4 can not compete with an ipad. Who needs a smart phone when you can have an Ipad that has a screen size that is more than 4X of that of an
iphone. I have a buisness that requires on the go google maps, and many emails, why would anyone want to deal with a 4 inch screen when they can have a 10 inch screen. The not being able to put it in your pocket is a lame excuse, their are many things in your house hold you can't put in your pocket, does that make them any less valuable, NO.

Well... my prediction is that iPad can and will evolve into a device that can replace your netbook and that is somehow easier to use than the netbook. Voice recognition with noise cancelation can replace the keyboard and tactile input is enough for light work. So... as ultimate travel companion that replaces the netbook, I think it has a future.

Iphone screen is to small to really use it as a netbook replacement. Ipad is perfect except it's missing ability to print via usb cabble. Writing is easy. Reading book is great. Starting time, usability is excellent. You don't get this results on netbook(more weight, less working time). olwe11

[citation][nom]dannyaa[/nom]It's still true that everything MOST people do on a netbook the iPad does better. Also, $15/200mb *is* realistic, primarily because WiFi is ubiquitous. It would only be in special cases that you'd really start to drain the data use of the iPad over 3G. If you use it well, you should be on WiFi much of the time - I see 3G on the iPad as data that helps bridge the gap in data as you get from hotspot to hotspot to do any big task. Of course, if you are using it for camping or a long road trip than you'd want to add $25/2gb plan for the month. Hopefully that would be sufficient, otherwise, screw you ATT.[/citation]

I'm doing more than one thing at a time on my netbook, right now, and almost always.... And it seems most people here like to jump on whatever network they can find anywhere to do anything...Not me! I prefer to have my own personal connection. Not a fan of hopping on mcdonalds' wifi to pay a credit card bill or whatever. Considering that, there is NO WAY that 200 mb is enough for any but the most casual user. I feel like this underscores the weakness of AT&T's service in this respect. I endlessly use my hd2 both on its own and tethered to my netbook, unbelievably convenient and with a 5 gb limit.

Hallo, have you noticed that the iPad is not a phone, and that the iPhone is not
a tablet ? Different products, different use case; you may need both, one of the two, or neither. Have fune.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the inability to see small type on the iPhone. Yes the resolution is about to increase, but will it be enough. As a member of the largest segment of the population, we baby boomers have a hard enough time reading small text in printed materials. I'm not sure how these enhancements are going to help us. In addition viewing web pages and many other documents requires zooming and constant scrolling around to read the content. I feel like I am viewing the internet world through a window the size of a business card. Honestly, the only thing holding me back from choosing the iPad is the fear that somebody will steal it if I accidentally lost it or left it somewhere.

iPhone 4 and iPad are buddy, companions.

The iPhone 4 and the iPad make perfect sense together, they go hand in hand.

The iPhone is like a watch - you always carry it with you wherever you go. You put it aside when you get a shower or go to bed.
iPad is used when you want to do a bit some more extensive or casual work in the internet, on facebook or when you show you show around pictures or presentations.

I doubt that anyone really wants to ready a longer document on a small screen regardsless how perfect it is. You can if you absolutely need to. But if you if your're on a coach/train/plane/sofa you probably would prefer using your iPad to do doing this and that.

iPhone and iPad are complementary products. It's not this product or that product it this product in combination with the other. If you can afford it. But hey, people waste a lot of money for a lot of things so rather waste it on an iPad which makes you a bit more relaxed and productive rather than on something else that does not nessescarily add something useful to your life or is even unhealthy.

Netbook? Ah well ... you should NOT have one.
Give it to your kids the even they will complain.

If you want to do some serious work you should rather use a REAL notebook or a desktop. That gives you all the performance and comfort you need to get some serious stuff done. For everything else iPhone plus iPad are the just perfect solution.

And hey, soon you will be able to you use your iPhone 4 like a regular cordless phone at home. With FaceTime there comes integrated IP-telephony with optional video. Just wait until AT&T will offer a plan for SIP and/or video telephony.

If they don't have a look at www.sipgate.com
That company gives you cheap and reliable IP telephony and you can hook up your iPhone via WLAN. That even gives you a nomadic landline that you can use wherever you find a friendly WLAN hot spot.

So while you talk on the iPhone 4 you can surf the net on the iPad to look up information or find a place to meet ...

I would not be astonished to see FaceTime clients for Mac, Windows, Linux, Android, MeeGo and even for Blackberry and Symbian fairly soon.

Poor Skype ... life will get tougher for them. If they were on the stock exchange I would short them immidiately. Unless the integrate FaceTime into their offering.

Great article and there are some valid points about the iPhone 4 cannibalizing the iPad, when thought of from a purely hardware perspective.

I have an iPad 3G and love it. Outside of work (where I definitely need a laptop and Office applications like Excel), it’s a great laptop replacement for me and much more portable and mobile than a home laptop. An added bonus is that you don’t have to take it out of its case during an airport security check.

I also think I would like the iPhone 4 given its new features. But the deal breaker for me is AT&T, primarily for its voice call quality (been an AT&T customer for 4 years). I have a land line at home because my AT&T cellular voice service is so terrible. In fact, I now carry my cell phone for only emergency calls, text and data and not as a reliable tool for making calls. Given the continued marriage between iPhone and AT&T, I am holding off on the iPhone 4 so that I won’t have to sign up with AT&T for another two years.

The ability to use the Apps and not have to commit to AT&T, in my opinion, is also a strong use case for the iPad over the iPhone.

I found these coments on this article on CNET, and they both sum up why A) I wouldn't buy the ipad, and B)Why I tend to dislike Apple:

"I feel like Apple really missed the point on this one. I know they want control of the money coming in through the App Store, but making an iPhone XL doesn't seem revolutionary in any way. I mean, I don't even know where I would use something like this in place of a laptop."

"He (steve jobs) needs allow others to continue what was started because he is obviously obsessed with thinness and minimalist design to a fault. At some point, usability and included features needs to supersede this rigid design philosophy. Take the MacBook Air- yes it can fit an a manilla envelop but what good is that if with one USB port? What good is a super think iMac if you need the interior volume of the 27" body just to get a Core i5/i7 (presumably because of the heat)? Why not have tons of USB ports? Why no Blu-ray? Why can't we have HDMI for the Mac Mini when the Apple TV features this connector? Why doesn't the 1" MBP have an SD card slot? Why didn't the iPod include a simple FM built in? Why is the iPad so limited if it's supposed to be the ultimate media tool? Why is it not 16:9 since just about every other Apple displace is 16:10 or 16:9?

You see what I mean? Say what you want about PCs but at least they give you options. You the buyer have the control over what features you'd like to pay for. I am a HUGE fan of Mac OS but the hardware lets us down time and time again. At some point when this Apple hysteria wears off (and Windows continues to improve), people will begin to realize that Steve does not respect his customers' choices. I use the new Windows at work (Mac only at home) and it's pretty slick. It such a shame that I'm a lifetime Apple user but can't go to an Apple store and buy the computer I want with all the features and desire- I can with Windows."

My thoughts exactly.

I couldn't disagree with you more. I'm a Mac person period. MacBook, iMac, iPhone and iPad. I will definitely not be upgrading to the new iPhone because of my iPad. The truth is, I only use the iPhone to make calls with anymore.

Whenever i try to use the iPhone to do anything more beyond texting and calling, i find the it frustratingly small now. The iPad is light and small enough go with me everywhere but big enough to comfortably avoid frustration.

You all seem to be missing ONE important thing in your fanboy discussions: the fun of using either an iPad or an Iphone. You are all just comparing the specs of different products, instead of USING it. Do you really think that an avarage person even thinks about how many pixels the iPad has? NO, the avarage person just uses it, and is propably having fun with it. To me, that is all that counts.

I don't know why everyone is saying that the iPad is a waste of money etc. etc.... If you don't need/want it then don't comment on it, some people like me actually want the iPad to watch movies on the plane or to play games on it... iPad is amazig device for gaming and if you haven't tried it then you obviously don't know. At least try it in the Apple store before you go and post these comments... I'm not saying that the iPad is the best device ever but it's pretty good... And no one tells you to buy it.
