I am not an avid console user but why would you want to run Linux on a console? This baffles me. Why don't you play games on it?

Why can't I do both? I'm a tech guy, and I like to tinker. Yes I enjoy gaming, and that's the primary reason I bought it, but there are very few electronic devices I haven't taken apart, modded, or installed custom on in my home. I think that's my right as someone that has purchased physical products.

I hope to build a CNC machine soon, and create my own devices. Point being, having an Other OS option was a call for me to tinker with my device. I bought this device, I don't remember signing a lease agreement.

Sony went the wrong way with this when the hack came, they should have acknowledged that with this someone talented was on the path to completely unlock the console, and should have beat them to the punch while securing their assets. Now, regardless of GeoHot's intentions, someone is going to try to modify his firmware for piracy, whether or not they are successful, only time will tell (let's hope not).

Applause for him. standing up for the little guy, and taking the fight to sony.

maybe sony will realize that all they are doing is encouraging hacking. take a feature from someone, and if they want it badly enough, they'll find a way to keep it.

All I have to say is this if you have ever read the EULA on the PS3 is it says you allow sony to make any and all changes and upgrades to the PS3 Firmware and PSN accounts or lose funtionality the the same with Xbox/Microsoft Live as soon as you created the account you had nothing to complain about thr removing or adding of features is totally thier discretion

[citation][nom]captaincharisma[/nom]the headline is "i'll find a way to keep Linux on the PS3" not i'll find a way to keep linux on the ps3 and keep you playing games, etc, etc.just choose one. would you rather have a useless OS or use the console for what it was intended for!!!!man i hate people[/citation]

Don't worry, i'm sure people hate you too

Grrr So what it will remove my Linux partition??
Or just the ability to boot to it?

I think Both suck, but at least one gives me back some HDD space!

[citation][nom]weegee64[/nom]Stop whining about the restrictions on consoles. You knew what you were getting into when you decided to be lazy and get a console instead of building a computer.[/citation]
Think that is the point, they knew they were getting OtherOS support, now Sony just takes it away, more then enough reason to be upset.

[citation][nom]wavebossa[/nom]It very well may be. But the question Sony is asking themselves is, "will we lose costumers for disabling this?" And i bet the answer is no.[/citation]

The answer is yes since now they need a (partial) re-write of the firmware in order to clean all the otheros code out (as far as i know just a boot loader).

Leaving the current lines of code in there is cheaper then replacing them or removing them. so no they wont lose any new sales but it still is expensive to re-write the firmware and disribute it.

Why not? ... or better why not both?,
For most of us the answer to your question would be because i can.
Yes it is that simple and since it runs nice and expands the functions of the console there really is no need to search for reasons why one would run linux and the better questions become why not, and why would one that does not use the function care so much about others wishes to keep it. In fact those who dont use it dont lose anything so they are out of line any way.

EULA wont hold up in court in most of the world and though for sure no one would sue them for doing some bug fixing removing functions is at least misleading your clients.
I dont know why people here keep bringing up the EULA but that might be because they are from the USA the only nation stupid enough to allow EULA to rise above the law.

the way i see it this is just sonys excuse to remove linux from all systems.. the slim has no os support which really was a good hint that sony were headed in this direction.. a future update will surely reveal the reasons for os removal.. perhaps sony will try and release and sell theyre own os purpose built for ps3.. another money makin scheme..

[citation][nom]babybeluga[/nom]I wonder if this guy has a job, or does he live with his mom who has no clue how to operate a computer. I think the latter, just because he blogs about his potential conquests...[/citation]

He's smarter than you. He won an Intel engineering program for $25000 for his holographic work. He's 19 and no he doesn't live with his mom, he goes to college. He knows better than you since you can't even google the guy's name and find out who he is instead of flaming the comment section with your pretentiousness.

[citation][nom]babybeluga[/nom]Sony isn't doing this because they are control freaks. They're doing it because they don't want to deal with the security risks that come with allowing a different OS on their console.[/citation]

What security reason? It's a proprietary system with proprietary software. No one gonna write viruses to affect PS3 beside Georgehotz who hacks the damn thing by "PHYSICALLY" instead of "REMOTELY" opening it. You know whats gonna brick your PS3? Sony's own software. A simple stupid Toshiba chip make the clock function in PS3 went haywire and shuts down the system since it can't calculate when is the leap year.

Technically Sony have stolen this feature that people have paid for.

This is exactly the the behavior everyone expects of Sony.
I even heard a customer when being shown a Sony PC saying "But it's a Sony"

Why any one would spent an extortionate amount on a BlueRay Player when Sony can disable it remotely?

They also disabled features on the PSP, no wonder no one will touch it with a bargepole .
