What are IRQs???? What do they do with hardware and what is so special about IRQs in Windows2000?

No offense, son ... but some questions should fall within the self-help category. This is because the information is readily available elsewhere.

It's good to ask questions ... but forums like this are more for troubleshooting than educating people on ordinary aspects of computing. Besides ... if the information <i>is</i> all over the place, why should someone here spend two hours typing a message to you, when you all you had to do was use a search engine, and do some reading?

This is not a flame. I remember what it was like to be a new user. But I also recall the amount of time and energy I spent to bring myself up to speed. It's this kind of motivation that makes the difference between someone just asking a question and forgetting the information a week later ... and someone who researches the subject matter, takes some notes, and retains it. It takes good study habits to be an educated user.

If you really want to know how to use a computer, and understand the inner workings, I suggest that you buy some books, and/or perhaps consider taking a class. Having some reference material at your fingertips can come in handy later on ... take my word for it.

Afterwards, if you need an answer to a question that you just can't find anywhere else ... come to the forum.

hmmm...guess you are right, but when you don't have ANY idea what is IRQ then how do you know where to find it? I don't trust Microsoft so I didn't even think of going there.
I don't take notes at all, I love computers and hardware so much that I can memorize anything (well maybe not) about them! I'm 14 and in USA I don't know where to take class about advanced stuff like that. Back in the country where I lived I could and I did. I don't know what books to read, I found over a hundred books about HTML language and don't know which one to buy!? I also don't know if I should know basic programming to know HTML (I don't know programmng at all). I spent one hour to find out what memory clock speed will Radeon2 use and everythingI found was 4 pipes with 250Mhz and is it DDR ir SDR?...(you don't have to answer that, it was just an example, I don't even know how to search right! I use old www.yahoo.com for that...)

Okay, Manarch. Point taken ... sort of. Here are some links:

<A HREF="http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/I/IRQ.html" target="_new">http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/I/IRQ.html</A>

<A HREF="http://www.computercraft.com/docs/irqs.html" target="_new">http://www.computercraft.com/docs/irqs.html</A>

<A HREF="http://www.hildrum.com/IRQ.htm" target="_new">http://www.hildrum.com/IRQ.htm</A>

However ... it took me less than three minutes to locate these sites for you, simply by searching. I typed in IRQ, and searched. That's not difficult.

There's no reason not trust a Microsoft website! What are they going to do ... eat you? LOL!

You don't need to know a computer programming language in order to learn HTML.

I've spent <i>thousands</i> of hours researching subjects about computers, Manarch. I spend an average of 4 hours a day, even now, continuing to accumulate material and learn new things so that I can stay current with the latest technology. I can sympathize with you over the amount of time it takes to locate information and teach yourself specific subjects ... but that's absolutely no excuse for being lazy. If I was 14, I'd be going through this stuff like a house-afire. Try doing it when you are 40.

The best search engine is Copernic 2001 Pro. It's a good investment. <A HREF="http://www.copernic.com/" target="_new">http://www.copernic.com/</A>

Most of us started with the Dummie books. They are a great source of basic understanding of different systems for the PC, they come in many subjects.
DOS for Dummies {obsolete}
Win95 for dummies
Win98 for dummies
Win 2000 for dummies {I'm sure}
Internet for dummies
PC upgrading for Dummies
and so on.
These books can be found at your local book and large PC stores.

My advice is to learn how to search the web effectively, as toejam ably demonstrated.

Seriously, if you know how to search, you can get the answers to most tech questions within a minute.

I'm not THAT stupid! I built my own pc and built one for my friend, I solve my OS problems and I'm VERY ADVANCED but still only a user. I know I need DOS for dummies and I need basic programming with HTML.

Slow down!!!! These are REAL BOOKS!!!, I have several!!! Don't let the name get you upset!!! IDG is the Publisher of Dummie books {I DIDN'T NAME THEM}!!! I'm really trying to help!! These books are filled with great advice and explanations {IRQ'S for example}!!!! They helped me!!!. When I upgrade to Win2000 or XP I'll get {WIN2000 or XP for DUMMIES} just for a good reference guide. I've been around since ATARI 2600 and these books DO HELP!!!!!!

ROTFL!

I had to laugh!

manarch is not the first person I've seen who has been offended by the titles of the "Dummies" series of books.

Heres's some advice, manarch ... something my old Dad used to say. "If all else fails, read the instructions."

You've sprinted into the category of "PC builder", but you didn't get prepared in advance. So now you are having to learn everything as you go ... which is working in reverse.

I applaud your enthusiasm, and I understand why it looked easy. Computers are really Lego's for Adults (a snap-together toy) in some respects. But when you are dealing with electrical components, especially when the parts are from different manufacturers, it's just not that unusual to be faced with compatibility issues. And your troubleshooting skills are not yet up-to-par ... certainly not in the "advanced" category. For example ... you didn't know what an IRQ was, or how to use a search engine ... and with that kind of gap in your education and experience, in my opinion, you weren't ready to assemble a machine ... much less build one for someone else.

If you build a computer, you have to support it. This is one reason that inexperienced individuals often buy OEM machines ... for the technical support and warranties that come with the computer. And you weren't ready to do that kind of support.

Consider this to be a lesson about hindsight and foresight ... one that some people never quite grasp. There is a difference between enthusiasm and arrogance ... and you need to understand the difference between the two before you start spending other people's money, and telling them that you can do the job. My generation (and all the previous ones) call this the "Arrogance Of Youth" ... and this is a perfect example.

Despite this critique (which I hope you will take in the spirit that it is intended ... i.e. not a flame), I wish you luck, and hope that this forum can be of continuing service to you in your education. With that in mind, here are a few links to other forums and sites, just so you can have additional information to study. And take some notes, dude! It's just not that difficult to cut-&-paste into Wordpad, and save the most important things you find. Then you can print them out. You'll be glad you did, later on ... a printout can be a life-saver if the computer refuses to boot! For instance, what do you do if the CMOS needs to be reset or flashed ... and you don't have a printed reference to your current BIOS settings?

Things that make you go, "Hmmm ..."

very very very appreciate your help. i would say I DID built a pc for myself (mu surrent one and first one, and with no problems). I'm like nothing in the world of computers and I understand that. As for my friends, they didn't give me money, they just asked what to buy and put things together is very easy. I worked, kinda helped my step-father's freind to biuld pcs, it is his hobby and people do trust him, I'd say we met over hunder different issues and problems and most of them were solved my him (I didn't have any idea what was the problem). His job is about something about networking, so I have a lot of practice with him and it helps. You are right about OEm products, I ordered PARTS (all) from www.aberdeeninc.com and everything wet fine, my friend bought OEM and he turned half of the stuff back, (hehe) as for BIOS, I would just take the battery out or take out the chip (BIOS) and put it someplace for 2 days (it helped with my old P2 BX BIOS). it is just sad that most of people I know use computers for games (so do I, but only when I have nothing to do) adn nobody is interested in hardware, only WHICH VIDEOCARD IS FASTER??? I DO do print outs and researches on stuff, but it takes good 3 hours to me to find the EXACT info I need, while my parents let me use PC only 2 hours a day (they a lot radiation comes from PC....this is sad...very sad...) I also (as you can see) have problems with my bad English, because it is my second language. (I understand EVERYTHING here though, but can't express my thought well).

Dude! Your an animal! (Meant as a compliment) I always tell myself I should take notes. I read a lot, but never take the time to write anything down. And unfortunately I tend to forget a lot! :( But your level of expertice is what I'm hoping to achieve 1 day. I made that fatal mistake of building computers for others (built 5 so far...only 2 for me). One of the computers (my brother's) is really on the fritz. I feel that I let him down. Worst part about it is he is in Texas and I am in Ohio. So I can't help him easily. He's about ready to sell the stupid thing and buy a store machine. I really feel that it wasn't completely my fault. I believe he simply has a bad component. I just can't seem to find out what it is so that he can replace it. Anyway, had I *REALLY* taken my time to read about all of his components it probably would have faired out better. I just love messing w/ these machines (especially building new ones) that I can't turn down my friends and family. In fact I just built a brand new one for a cousin. It's very similar to my brother's computer but seems to run very stable. My brother-in-law wants me to build his now...I think I'm finally going to say "no".

Take care.

Catheter and Caffeine IV are in place. Let's PLAY.

Most hardware incompatibilities stem from the motherboard. Just do the lastest reviews of the current motherboards out. Or if you want you can check out Microsofts Compatibility list for hardware and go by whats current. I have a problem with Win2k and my Video (Diamond Viper II Z200) 32MB ram AGPx2. I have it in a K7M rev. 1.04 and the problem I'm having is when I have 32bit colors activated BOLD and Normal text seem to get corrupted also most 3D games will not work with this combination. In this case I figured it was all my IRQ's sharing. So I re-installed the OS with ACPI disabled in Windows. I had to modify the Setup Bootdisks I made with the OS. Really easy. Even easier is when it asks for SCSI Drivers press F-6 while installing press F-5 instead and pick standard PC. That removes the ACPI (which is the Bios PowerManagement) so you can't use hibernation or sleep modes, those need to be disabled in the OS. Other than that its a pretty stable system. Oh the problem wasn't with the motherboard basically it was the OS and the Diamond product because they don't send their drivers into Microsoft to get approved for the OS. Kinda stupid really. Good Luck!
