Is 1440p the way to go for 2016 GPUs?

I have no discrete GPU in my system and I have decided to just wait for the new gpus in seven months or so. I was going to get a 1080p/60hz monitor, but I am thinking the new lines of gpus should be pushing past 60fps at 1080p in a lot games at max settings. Yes, we don't have any concrete info on the upcoming ones but that seems like a reasonable projection. I'll be shopping in the $200 range.

I don't care too much about 144hz because I don't stream or play competitively in any way. Just weighing my options at this point, and would be happy to hear others' opinions on this.

The problem with 1440P is that to get the same game play (settings) as you get with a $300 card on 1080P you need a $600 card. It is the reason why I am still on 1080P.

yeah, I was thinking that maybe the Pascal equivalent of gtx960 or Arctic Islands equivalent of r9-380 might be pushing something like 70fps on max settings in a given game at 1080p. Meanwhile, it would suck if my monitor is capped at 60fps and can't take full advantage of the gpu's ability. I would hate to have to upgrade my monitor less than a year after buying it.

Game will only cap to 60fps on 60Hz monitor if Vsync is enabled.

I don't think there will be much luck for solid 60fps+ gameplay on $200 gpu's at 1440p. The other half of that equation is of course the monitor. A 1440p capable gpu won't do any differently on a 1080p monitor. If the budget is tight for a gpu is there enough budget for a 1440p screen?

Sorry, should have specified better. Was thinking that the gpu would go past 60fps at 1080p but 1440p would obviously bring fps way down, meaning that the gpu power is used on a higher resolution as opposed to additional fps that can't be used on 60hz monitor with vsync on (which I guess you can sometimes get screen tearing with it off). I'm fine with anything over 40fps.

nope, there's not enough in the budget for 1440p screen, but I was thinking of buying it anyway and hoping for the best. Probably will go 1080p and just upgrade later on depending on what these gpus may offer. 2016 seems like it will be an exciting tech year; almost held out to get a look at Zen cpu but went with skylake.
