With that said if your video card can only put out 60FPS while your gaming then their no reason to get a 144 monitor. The whole thing about 144 is having the hsrdware to run a very high FPS.
Having a 144hz monitor will not hurt your frame rate, it just gives you the ability to display more frames per second. It will use more power because your GPU is able to render more frames, but it will not cause a hit to performance.
