I'm having issues with a computer I built in 2011. I had just replaced my 580 with the 970 which now seems unnecessary as im still crashing in certain games. Crashing where my computer just restarts. I ran a memtest on this last year and didnt have any issues, but not sure if I ran it enough. Also ran gpu tests and that was fine. Im okay with upgrading my PC, but if I could just find that one problem thats causing hangups where my comp freezes for minutes at a time I'd rather do that. My guess is there is problems with my first gen Mobo and SSD acting up. I've always had double boots, slow boots and startup with mild hangups. But now it crashes when I want to game, not all games, League of Legends is the only one not crashing. CS:GO, GTA V crash. Any advice guys? Thanks!

Solution

This seems like a power supply problem right off of the bat.

Again this seems like the power supply.

That is exactly correct, or to try your power supply in another confirmed working computer with similar power draw and see if it displays any of those symptoms.

i dont see the picture anymore... it was 81 C not %.
i have a 240 samsung and the software allocated 2.8 gigs out of the "249"gigs + additional allocation for standard formatting.

you have at least the formating gigs allocated, and even if it was 81% full youd still be ok...

your software for you drive SSD !! install please.

you should download this and let it optimize for you; as WINDOWS is horrible at handling TRIM settings !! which SSD needs vs hdd.

once trim is on it will gradually increase you speed and reliability of you SSD!

^^anyone how wonders or doesn't know how to treat their SDD read and follow^^. SSD's manage themselfs if setup right and not just pluged in and forgotten.

im still believer you mobo is at fault FYI. but set you SSD straight anyway 😉

Got my C Drive down to 70% now. I installed the crucial utility and it says it cant find any new drivers, i'll have to check in bios if thats true. Other than that everything is healthy. I'm leaning more towards the Mobo as its given me crap since i got it than a power supply, but im not negating that.

It seems that a new motherboard might be in order anyway so I would start there as long as that's an affordable option.

I might consider upgrading my SSD, Ram to 32 gb and Mobo.

16gig ram , and if you really want buy another ssd and and set in raid 0 . na grab a sesonic 550 while your at it youl be set for like 2-3 years
first comes mobo. if you really think you need to upgrade everything else you can do it then..

Yeah. I actually have 16 gb ram now. I'd upgrade to 32 gb. I work with render software so it really helps. I was gonna go with that 77 mobo you mentioned, but i havnt looked yet.

There is a PC shop around town, but ive never used them. Might be worth them pinpointing the actual problem. My hunch is the Mobo, its always been that. But the power supply is new to me. So I'd have to test it, which is a little more challenging.

AsRock Z77

and maybe upgrade to the samsung EVO series and get like 250bg minimum. thoughts?>

Purchased

1 x ($129.99) ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6
1 x ($99.99) SAMSUNG 850 EVO MZ-75E250B/AM 2.5" 250GB SATA III

Will arrive on Mon, Tuesday. I'll keep you posted one I have the new Mobo, SSD installed. Figured why not get a bigger SSD for 100 bucks. Was cheap. If all fails I'll be going with the Power Supply next.

Yep. It appears to be the power supply. I'm ordering a new one tonight. Installed new Mobo, SSD. Installed my game, Boom, insta-restart.

But on a plus side I did need a new MOBO as the startup is 6 sec now. The new SSD is 100GB larger. so I'm not upset.

Its odd, I've never had an issue with a power supply with my 4 other builds. What was the first symptom that gave it away?

Exactly as I said above. The crashing where the computer just restarts. Blue screens could mean hard drive memory, processor or anything but when the screen just locks or it just restarts (when temps are good) it usaully means there was a fluctuation in power and it made your PC hiccup.

Yeah. Cuz I'd check the bluescreen logs and nothing. Good point. Does this mean the Power supply is bad or can't handle this rig?

Yeah. Makes sense. Some games like LoL didn't crash me, ever. But the more intense gpu would crash me. It was my first Corsair and it was the top rated power supply on newegg. I guess I'll stray away from their supplies for awhile.
