is maxtor good to use?

now only maxtor launched ATA-133 harddisk in the market, is it good to use?
among seagate, maxtor & western digital, which one is the best?

There's not much different between ATA-133 and ATA-100 HDDs in terms of disk performance. In fact, the maxtors never reach the ATA-133 most of time. The maxtors are good and reliable, but the WDs with 8MB cache are better performance among the rest.

I suggest you read Tom's review on the WD. You may also check out the following site which have great reviews on various brands of HDDs.

I agree with elzt - get the Western Digital. Maxtor is subpar compared to WD.

maxtor will have a 8mb cache by the end of the year, and denser platers.

For reliability I recomend Seagate Barracuda drives. Maxtors are decent if they arent DOA. If a Western Digital drive is bad it will die in the first couple weeks. IBM drives are seldom DOA or die early deaths, however, I believe they had a bad production run or design flaw in drives manufactured during a certain period that causes them to die after several months or about a year worth of frequent use. Right now I am staying away from them until I hear that this problem has been resolved.

IMO, Maxtor makes the most stable drives. WD and IBM I won't even begin to start explaining how many issues I've had w/ em, and Seagate used to be nice, now they're not.

I only recommend one line of Seagates, the Barracudas. I have heard of a few Maxtor DOA drives.

Obviously all types of drives will have some doa's, cause errors do occur. What I mean is with which one one's data will be safe and last the longest.

I dont like it when any drive has a defect that shows up frequently. An assembler I know stopped carrying Maxtors because an unusual number of the drives would be DOA. If this is something that would happen in shipping or in manufacturing I dont know. If it was in shipping then it indicates that the drives lack some basic resiliency or that Maxtor had some really clumsy shippers (he isnt the only one I heard this from).

I stopped recommending IBMs after this latest problem. Now if it is just a firmware issue that can be solved by that update then I will consider recommending them again once I have confirmation that this is the problem. Until then, I recommend Seagate Barracudas. The price is alittle higher than the IBMs but I feel more comfortable suggesting them.

I know a guy who has bought nothing but Maxtors and he loves them. He had one DOA but he returned it, got another one, and has been fine since. I havent seen any real problems with them other than the abnormal frequency of DOA. Again, I am talking about it from an assemblers stand point, I make my judgements from people who really get to see how reliable a product is because they sell alot of them. In this case there were alot if drives he had to send right back. He said about 1 and 10 of the maxtor drives would be DOA. Again, it is easier to notice this when you order quite a few at a time. Stories like these put a sour taste in my mouth for a product.
