Hello. I would like to use my tablet as a Hot Spot to give internet access to all my devices, without connecting my devices to unsecured Wi-Fi, and risking getting viruses.

So, this is what i did:

  1. I downloaded NetShare+ on my tablet.
  2. I connected my tablet to a Wi-Fi network that isn't secured with a password, and isn't secured at all.
  3. I opened NetShare+, and set the configurations.
  4. I activated NetShare's Hot Spot.
  5. Then, i opened the Wi-Fi setting of my laptop, and set the configurations, too.
  6. I connected my laptop to the Hot Spot of the NetShare app installed on my tablet.
Now, my tablet is receiving an internet connection from a 100% non-secured Wi-Fi router, then gives that connection to my laptop via Hot Spot.

My question is, is my laptop safer now, than before, when i used a Wi-Fi connection directly from the dangerous router, instead of using a Hot Spot? Is my information encrypted? Can someone gain access to my device, install viruses, spy on me, harm my files, and steal my sensitive information?

This is the app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=netshare.wifihotspot

So, what do you think? Am i safe now?

Solution
Wifi network is only 1 point in the network where your data can be intercepted. Even using a VPN your traffic is only encrypted between you and the vpn provider. After your data comes out of the vpn tunnel at the providers network it then travels the rest of the way without any extra encryption.
You can kinda think of your connection between your PC and the hotspot as a similar to a vpn. The data is only encrypted in the first connection everything past that point is not encrypted.

The key is always ensure that you are using HTTPS for all web sessions. This means that your data in encrypted between your machine and the end server. It was designed to prevent anyone getting in between and intercepting or changing the data...

I don't think it is any safer. ALL the data still goes across an open link -- from the tablet to the WIFI source. So any non-encrypted data is still visible to anyone.

Will using VPN help me? If i connect to the dangerous router that doesn't have protection, will activating VPN encrypt all my data, and protect me?

The key is always ensure that you are using HTTPS for all web sessions. This means that your data in encrypted between your machine and the end server. It was designed to prevent anyone getting in between and intercepting or changing the data.

Many years ago people used to do things like intercept facebook accounts at public coffee shops. The use of HTTPS has prevented that. Also wifi signals are much more complex with all the fancy stuff like mimo so interception of signals is much harder than it used to be.
HTTPS got to be the standard after the government got exposed intercepting data at large ISP data hubs.

Wifi interception on open wifi is more of a wanabe hacker thing that kids attempt. It tends to be too much effort for real hackers. Most modern hacking tries to trick the user into running something they shouldn't. The person tends to be the weak link in security now days.

Just make extra effort to ensure you never use a site that is not using HTTPS for anything important.....that should be always be a concern even if you are running on a fully secure wifi or vpn.
