Is this a Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 Rev. 2 card?

If you want a rev 2 card, look for ones that have Ultra after it. I'm not usre if MSI has one out at the moment, but the 5600 rev 1 won THG Editors choice.

When I went to the website, I stopped as soon as I saw "256mb". 256mb is worthless in a midrange card. The ONLY 5600 worth buying and I MEAN <b>ONLY</b> one is the 128mb 5600 Ultra Rev.2. Don't start with the Rev.1 or nonultra they both <b> SUCK </b>.

Just because it has ultra in it doesn't mean it is revision 2. Revision 2 is the 2nd ultra. Anyone know of a card's model name that is REVISION 2?

Like WS said/wrote, the only way to be sure a card is a REV.2 is to check the clock speeds, If it's advertised at 400/400(800) then it's LIKELY a REV.2 (it COULD be a ba$tard OC'ing a REV.1 but I doubt the memory will go that high) any ULTRA below that is a REV.1

However it appears that no one is stressing a name change (and make it easier for consumers), so watch out, one brand may be a new flip-chip version of the same old model number in one store, but not in another store, despite the same box/name/ basic features. So be sure the people you are buying from know the difference; unlike JeanLuc above.

Dude, I respect whatever you will go with, but I do will let you off on one thing:
DO NOT go buy this card with the mindset that it will play DX9 games well.
You will be sorely disappointed. BADLY. The card is often beaten by the 9600PRO btw, has sometimes a 50% lower performance in DX9 shader tests, and is not guaranteed by any means to have much support for future games.

Be aware you are buying this card for current games, and you should be fine.

current games have switched to DX 9 have they not?

No, current games have SOME minor DX9 components (PS 2.0) but are not really fully DX9. And some may request that you load DX9 to play them, however they will run almost as well if not better (depending on settings) on parts that are not DX9 compliant, they require that you load the newest version so that those with the cards can take advanatge of the 1 or 2 DX9-like features that have been added. Truthfully he only 'compelling' reason to get DX9 hardware right now is DEMOs, and unless you can look at 50 demos and go 'That's SOooo cool!' then I doubt you will get MUCH more benifit from DX9-class hardware.
If you need a greaphics card now then the FX5600U-R.2 isn't a 'bad' choice, however you may get as much playability/enjoyement out of a GF4. The R9600PRo is in the same class as the FX5600U-R.2 but it has the same (do you need it right now issue). If you like to SEE the added features without necessarily using them (they may cause you frame rates to drop significantly) in gameplay, then go with the DX9 cards, otherwise the GF4 will likley give you similar framerates. Now the only caveat to that is AA/AF, the R9600Pro and FX5600U-R.2 will play a little bit better at higher res. and usually noticeably better with AA/AF enabled. So you might want to consider that.
Just don't rely on this card being a kick-ass DX9 card when the actual games are released, it will likely require you to play at much lower res. and with some of the 'eye-candy' turned-off versus the mid-level cards released in 6-9 mths when the games come out.
IF you can wait, then wait, if not then you need to decide if you want to save a little to upgrade later (GF4), or buy something now that will let you get a slight feel for the DX9 features, but will also cost more.

Just be sure that as much as the FX5200 is 'useless' for DX9 gaming, the mid-level cards (FX5600U/R9600P) won't let you play those DX9 titles in all their glory (heck we're still not sure if the Top of the line cards will yet).

Great post, only thing I don't agree with is the current supposed "mini DX9 features currently out." I don't recall any game so far having that. Only 3dMark and the DEMOs do, really.

So really, DirectX 9, the software itself, is useless at the moment for anyone that doesn't watch DEMOs. It's only there to tell you "Hey, we can now wait for the games to roll".

Hope he does the right choice though, and doesn't come to you saying "But THGC's Buyer's Guide showed it was awesome in performance!!!"

are there any other FX 5600 rev 2 cards except for the gainward one mentioned? I can't seem to find other ones like from MSI or Asus.

The only things I have heard is that there are some features on FREELANCER that only show up on DX9 compliant cards, there was supposed to be something about Will Rock (the Demo sucks, I've tried it) and some other titles. I don't remember which ones or what is added, but I do remember one reviewer including a list of things in a review about a month back. But like I've said, no compelling reason in any of that.

But like we've said, come time for fully featured games, I think it will be a struggle for most cards out there now let alone the mid-market and value cards.
