I was browsing Frosty Tech's reviews of conventional heatsinks. I'm not sure how much better water cooling or thermoelectric is. Anyways, I came across this pathetically simple one : http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2233
It is number 1 on one of their benchmarks, and in the top 5 on most. It's also almost the quietest one.
So : super quiet, works as well as any conventional heatsink can work. Heck, I don't even know if water cooling can do much better, even water cooling can only cool to a temperature somewhat above ambient.
And all it is is 3 heatpipes, and a big fan.
Neat. So would you guys recommend this heatsink? Its under $40 on newegg, making it super cheap as well as all of the other good qualities.
I just noticed it's one of the best reviewed top sellers, as well, so I guess I'm probably the last one on these forums that figured this out.
Still, it seems kind of lame that a device with 3 heatpipes and just 1 fan is better than all the other monstrous coolers out there. Heck, there's one that has a water pump, a fan, AND a peltier cooler all in one device...that doesn't cool under load very well at all.
I guess it's like on BBC's Robot Wars, where the "Wedge" robots generally dominated the field over vastly more sophisticated machines.
