hmm- you are not stating (that I saw) what heatshink and fan combo you'll be using for your cpu.

Make sure the PSU is rated at least 300W

Obviously I guess you have speakers, screen, mouse and keyboard?

Getting a slower CPU and better graphic card will balance better, but it depends how long you are saving for your next upgrade. A Geforce Ultra with a 800Mhz + CPU should perform better than a 1.2 with GePro. Of course if you can afford it the 1.2 and an Ultra are very nice to have!

Yeah, im not sure what hsf i should use, that was supposed to be part of the question (my fault).

I was under the impression that the Pro DDR ram is 33 mhz faster than GTS ram?

the difference between a pro and ultra are nearly nothing, especially considering you can overclock the pro, if I remember correctly, the memory runs the same speed, its only 30mhz GPU difference, both are still limited by the memory bandwidth in most apps...
I'd go with it pretty much as is, although, personally, I'm not that impressed with DDR.
call it a hunch, but like the P4, I think the early adopters are going to be disappointed. are there any boards that can use the new PC2400 or PC2700?
10% faster is better, but...

Actually, the PRO is supposed to come with a 5.5ns, the GTS 6ns. This is supposed to provide 400MHz memory speed for the Pro, compared to 333 for the GTS. But for a few months now people have been selling "Pro" cards with 6ns memory at GTS prices. These cheap version will not outperform the GTS. But you can still find a Pro with 5 or 5.5ns memory if you are willing to pay a few dollars more.

128MB RAM is liable to be a little short for games...you might want to go 256MB, especially if you plan to run Win2K.

there's a little (x2) at the end of the line....

Didn't know about the memory speed on the pro/ultra cards. Anyone know how to work out/find out what it is or do you need the book?

So so far so good? yes that's 256 of memory.

This is a bit pricey so any subsitutions without too much loss in performance are excellent.

Sorry for going off topic a bit here. But the Pro Version is supposed to have 5ns ram not 5.5. Nvidia's reference for pro boards are 200/400. However many companies are selling cards with the 5.5ns ram and the default speed of the cards are 200/366. Just be careful what card you decide to grab.

Blah, Blah Blahh, Blahh, blahh blah blahh, blah blah.

right, you got me thinking now, not you specifically PettyTheft...

What raelly is the difference between the GTS PRO 64 and the Ultra 64? The specs on Hercules' page are not matched.

GTS PRO:

Amount of RAM (MB) 64
Type of RAM DDRAM
Speed of RAM (MHz) 400
Speed of RAM (ns) 5.0
Bandwidth 6.4

GTS Ultra:

Amount of RAM (MB) 64
Type of RAM DDRAM
Speed of RAM (MHz) 460
Speed of RAM (GB/sec) 4.0
Bandwidth 7.36

on top of this the Ultra has a 50Mhz higher GPC core abd 60Mhz higher RAM rate, but it doesn't state latency of the Ultra RAM - any ideas?

Ya know, I think i might just go for the geforce 2 ultra 64 meg, it seems to be less of a hassle.

Any optimizations or sacrifices i should make?
A decrease in price would be nice because I still have to buy a monitor for this thing. So if you have nay ideas on how to decrease price but not too much on performance, lemme know.
