I am a great fan of both Jak & Dexter and Ratchet & Clank. I only
Played Jak 1 & Ratchet II. Now I am wondering which one to get. Jak II
& III there is a radical change from I. Is it ok to get Jak III and not
II. Similarly should I get Ratchet I or III (I can't play online)?
Finally I can complete the collection but I don't think I have that
much time to spend on gaming. All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Subhash

I enjoyed all 3 of the R&C games. My personal opinion is that R&C2 was
the best of the three, but they are all well worth the play.
I didn't care that much for J&D, so I never played 2 or 3. I cannot
help you there.
Note that R&C1 and Jak2 are both greatest hits titles, while #3 in
either set is not. If your budget only allows for one of the 3s, I'd
say definitely get the two GH games instead.
As for time constraints, R&C 2 was the longest of the R&C games for
me, but the others were not too short anyway.

I've played all six titles, and while the two series are often
compared to each other, they are different games. Amusingly, Ratchet
and Clank II (Goin' Commando) even has a few nods to Jak and Daxter,
which I won't give away if you haven't played it yet. :)

As with most games and their sequels, it isn't required to play them
in order, but it does help if you care to know what's going on. I
played all the way through Jak and Daxter, but Jak II was SO
frustrating at spots that I put it down and never went back to it. I
got stuck at the hovercycle race through the city - I just could NOT
win it, after at least 100 attempts and two broken controllers. As
much as Jak II tried to be non-linear (almost Grand Theft Auto-like)
at this particular point there's nowhere else to go until you win the
race. Then I picked up Jak III (after hearing it was easier) and
didn't really understand what was going on at the beginning, since I
never finished Jak II. And then I got stuck again (this time at the
"fly the glider through the rings" level.) I personally have a problem
with games that come to a grinding halt just because you can't get
past one spot...

Ratchet and Clank, on the other hand, is pretty much a series of
platform smasher games. There is also a continuing storyline, but it
doesn't affect gameplay all that much if you didn't play the previous
(although you do get weapon bonuses if you have a save from the
previous game on your memory card.) Each game builds on the previous,
adding more weapons and upgrades, but essentially it's the same game
style - fly from planet to planet, break things, kill enemies, and
collect bolts to buy weapons. Ratchet and Clank III - Up Your Arsenal
boasts the most weapons of the series, such that they had to add an
alt-menu to hold all of them. Sadly I never finished R&C III - I had
the game for like two months but no time to play it, then decided it
was time to send it back to Gamefly for the next in my queue. I'll
grab it at EB at some point... so many games, so little money...

If you're undecided, I suggest a rental to make sure you like the game
first. The earlier titles are probably in bargain bins by now, so you
might be able to find them for under $20. There's also Gamefly.

Few questions there I shall try and answer them one by one.

Jak 2 is very different to Jak 1. Its alot harder and there are huge
differences in some of the gameplay - alot of driving about on hovercrafts.
Jak 3 IMO is better than Jak 2 - not so much driving about (apart from in
sandy areas and you have proper vehicles). Jak 3 is also easier than Jak 2.
It would be fine to play Jak 3 without Jak 2, they do not need to be played
in order.
Ratchet 3 is online for multiplayer, but you do not need to go online to
play the game. It has a full single player game mode. Personally I would
play Ratchet 1 before 3 because you won't have to backtrack with weapons
etc.

I heard Jak 2 was a very frustrating game so I never bought it, even
though I enjoyed Jak & Daxter (not Dexter, damn it). Maybe I'll give Jak
3 a try once it comes down to GH price.

R&C are awesome games, on the other hand. All of them. I don't regret
paying full new price for them one bit.

Just my opinion...

You are right. Jak 2 was one of the most frustrating games I had ever
played. Jak 3 on the other hand I found very easy.

Jak II and III: pure evil, avoid these like the plague. Bad gameplay,
bad storytelling, bad games. Bad, bad, bad.

Ratchet 1 was great but hard to go back to after the upgradable
weapons. of version II. I'd go with Ratchet III. I don't have online
either and totally got my money's worth, it's every bit as good as
Ratchet II single-player, and then some.

I much prefer the Ratchet & Clank games to the Jak games, so I would
recommend R&C 2 or 3 before Jak 2 or 3. Both R&C 2 and 3 are spectacularly
fun to play, so you can't go wrong with either, but 3 has what is purported
to be an awesome online mode, if you're connected.

As to Jak 2 vs. Jak 3, 2 is at many points incredibly frustrating and
difficult. I never finished it. I have gotten about 80% of the way through
Jak 3, but again, I don't think it compares to the R&C games for sheer
fun...
