I am not sure which group to post this in, so I will do it in several. Last night I put together a K 6-2 500 with 128mb ram. Just bought it. When I exit outlook express I get a fatal blue screen with an error 0028:C0070E30 in VXD VIAGART (01)+ 00000829 I am using a Soyo sy-5ema+ motherboard with an ATI 8 meg agp graphics card. Any have any ideas. What can I do?

Hmm ... I'm guessing that the motherboard is a VIA chipset since just about all motherboards that support an AMD chip are. Even though I couldn't find your motherboard in the product listing on Soyo's home page, I'm 99.9% sure the motherboard has a VIA chipset in it.

That being the case, the problem could be any number of things. Unfortunately it all really stems from the VIA chipset though. If you can, try replacing the video card with a PCI video card. For some reason I've seen that fix a lot of problems with VIA motherboards. Also, if you can try putting different memory in.

If you can't then best of luck. Welcome to the world of VIA.

Either way, if you can in any way update the motherboard's drivers, there may yet be hope. I'd severely hope that somewhere on the Soyo page there are drivers. If not, there should be on VIA's page. I don't know if VIA's 4-in-1 drivers would work for your motherboard or not.

Anyway, if you can't guess, I'm almost sure the problem is related to your motherboard. Especially it being an older AMD chip meaning it's probably on an older motherboard and thus using an older VIA chipset.

Best of luck.

Wow I have that exact same computer here at my room! I don't get any errors but the 5EMA+ is probably one of soyo teks more popular boards, in fact you can still buy it from some places. Try flashing the bios. Also check your drives for errors too. After that maybe try any new Patches for the AGP. good luck!

I hate picking fights... but it's so fun

That error is a problem between your video card and VIA chipset.
Flash bios
Newest video drivers

If that dont fix.

Break your system down, take out all cards except video.

If that doesnt fix it

Swap out your RAM
Swap out your video card

Aureal sound card?

Have you installed the latest drivers 4.25a from Soyo? It probably will have updated GART drivers in it. Try that along with the latest bios and video drivers.

***Hey I run Intel... but let's get real***

If you only get this error when exiting from Outlook Express (OE), then I would bet it has something to do with that program. If you are runnning McAfee(Sp?)virus scan, that could be the problem. There was an issue with how to set up the e-mail scanning with either Outlook or OE. If you don't run this program, but OE is the only program giving you problems, I would reinstall OE. Oh, if you are running any visus scan programs that scan your e-mail, try turing them off, reboot, and then see if the same thing happens.

Thanks for closing the loop. I am new to this board and I've noticed that lots of people ask for help, and then never tell what helped, if anything. Glad to hear it was an easy fix!

I agree. It is nice when people tell what the outcome was and how they eventually solved it. If everyone did this, it would make helping others much easier.
