For those of you with X2 problems, other than the MS patch and AMD patch, have you tried adding the /usepmtimer parameter to your boot.ini file. This fixed a multitude of problems for me. It works with XP home/pro with SP2 and XP-64.

sample line from boot.ini file:

hi dude. ı couldn't understand why computer stuff is expensive in its motherland. Can you tell the reasons and give a comparison between the prices in taiwan and in newegg e.g.

ı want to add that generally the processor prices are same with newegg but especially video cards are much higher in turkey for example ı paid 415 $ +74 $tax=489 $ for my gigabyte 7800 gt 🙁

well, generally speaking computer hardware in taiwan is 10 to 20 percent cheaper than the uk, below is a link to a typical taiwanese computer website, in chinese ofcourse but i navigate it and i barely speak a word of chinese.....

thatll give u an idea, although i too paid over the odds for my 7800 gt, i paid 16200 NT dollars, which is about 290 british quids, bout 80 quid more than in uk!

but on the other hand i paid 11050 for my x2 3800, which is 197 quid, or 18 quid cheaper than in the uk, so almost 10 percent cheaper, but it ranges, things are cheaper, but not many people have money here, they earn about 1.50-2.00 US dollars an hour for working at KFC!, the average income for a person sales manager for example is 35000NT a month, or 1000 dollars a month, and thats fairly good for taiwan, being a foreign teacher here however i earn double that 😛, ahh english, i love it!

VAT (Value Added Tax) that is added to goods is 17.5 percent

and income tax ranges between about 27%-40% depending on your income

but i pay 3% tax here, and if you work illegally you dont pay tax at all, and i think thats also the case if you work parttime in many schools at the same time, so pretty much what i earn goes in my pocket!!

Upgrade to fast Socket 939 X2 processor when prices come down
Add an additional GeForce 7800gt
Upgrade to 64-bit Vista

Right now there aren't many dual-core or 64-bit advantages, stay off of the bleeding edge!

dont knock it... ur just not a multi tasker nor do u have dual monitors so u can really see the big difference in processing my opteron 165 running @ 2.8ghz with air cooling will crush whatever single core prosessor u get in single core aps

If you are a regular user, or a gamer, you probably won't notice much difference with dual vs single core except your computing experience will be a bit smoother.

For example, once in a while, something may peg the CPU just as you try to do something else. If so, you may experience a small "delay". Using dual-core you'd be less likely to have that happen.

If you commonly do some CPU intensive tasks at the same time as other stuff, like say, compiling applications while doing something else, or 3D rendering (not 3D gaming), and ad-naseum while doing whatever else you want to do, then you'll notice your PC responds much nicer than it would have normally.

If you don't need any of that, you may be well suited to stay single core if the price difference is noticable in your budget. Otherwise, you may have to wait until some other applications arrive that you care about getting the dual core benefit to really see any difference.

There comes a point where computers become so fast it really isn't noticable to have even a 100% boost in CPU performance.

Some sloppy programming can even include delays which FORCE the program to wait xyz milliseconds just to be sure that something is done before it continues. A programmer may do that just because it gets the "job done".

Yessir, you are probably correct. You are on. . . THE BLEEDING EDGE! You have two monitors, you have a server class processor, you are doing a 55% overclock, you are an early adopter that pushes his computer to the edge.

For the rest of us who aren't playing Half-Life 2 on one monitor and encoding a DVD on another monitor, we will be much more happy with a faster single core processor that costs less.

BTW: That is a very impressive overclock. You must have thermal grease in your veins rather than blood.

yeah, i like 2 get the best bang 4 the buck so i can use the computer 4 atleast 1 year and not be outdated (yes im a gamer/power user)

only single core cpu u can get to match mine in single core is a fx-57 or oc 3700 with 1mb of cache

Heres my whole .02$ on this subject.

The X2 3800+ is pretty slow when you think about it... its the same thing as the veince 3000+ no??? just theirs two of them (logically).

When clocked over say a good 500mhz you see a noticable difference (a 25% boost in clockspeed). The two main keys are, like so many other people have said are:

1) Very few software programs are designed to take advantage of a dual core processor

2) Most people dont need to be ripping a cd album to MP3 while ripping a DVD onto their hard drive and suddenly get an urge to go play some COD2.


If you look at the differences, you'll see that dual core isnt all that its cracked up to be. The 3000+ Veince got a total of 5 FPS less on UT 2004 over the 3800+ X2. The 3700+ (San Deigo) Killed it by over 20fps and it costs considerably less then the X2 does. On the DIVX 6 benchie the X2 3800+ finished its run in 5:33 while the 3000+ took 9:08. On the Lame MP3 encoder test you have a difference of about 30 seconds between the X2 3800+ and the 3000+. In the doom 3 1280 test the difference is 1.3 frames!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you figure it out.... you take a CPU that retials for 120$ and compare it to one that retails for nearly 300$ and soak it all in. Now the kicker will be if the new windows is designed to make proper use of both cores... if it does then the money would have been more then worth it. If not then its just a so I can say I have it CPU.
