Here's the short story.... new build completed in January. 9800X3d, 64GB DDR5 etc etc. Initially I carried over my 3080ti in anticipation of the 5000 series launch but went ahead and picked up an Asrock Taichi 7900XTX in the event that could not get a 5000 series. So, this past weekend I gave up on the 5000 series and installed the XTX. I have only used it for about 30 minutes on MSFS and it was butter smooth.

Fast forward to today and I was able to get an MSI 5080 Trio OC. The only issue is it is black and my new build is 100% white in a 3500X case.

My main use for my PC is flight simulator. From there I occasionally play COD, RDR2, just getting into cyberpunk, etc etc. I do not do any multiplayer at all. I know there is a cost difference - ~$500 and some would say its not worth it at all to get the 5080.

So, what is your opinion? Would you ditch (sell) the XTX for the 5080 or keep the XTX? Isnt the 5080 more future proof with DLSS, etc?

I figure at some point this year I will be able to get a white 5080 as well.... so, whether I keep the XTX or get the black 5080, there will be a white 5080 in my future.

If the 7900 XTX is meeting your needs (I have one and it performs great), then why the additional expense of the 5080?

There is no such thing as truly future proof. New tech is always just around the corner, like the new Radeons to be released next month. That is a game you can never win (the whole future proofing thing).

Keep the card 5000 series cards are just garbage out the gate and already catching fire.

It's amazing how much money & time people waste with aesthetics in their PC. IF the 7900 XTX is "butter smooth" but your more concerned about physical appearance of the rig.... 🤣

Yes, same as those who waste time and money on custom water loops..... not my cup of tea but hey, to each their own. I'm more concerned about which card is best for the next year or so. and if I end up keeping the 5080 for 3 months and drop another $1500 on a white one in May... well then thats the tea I prefer to drink.

Tough call the AMD fan in me says keep the 7900xtx BUT if your chasing RT the 5080 will be the better option.

That said though i would wait till the 9070xt drops only a few months away

( latest rumour mill is saying a 32gb vram 9070xt which if true is like stupid overkill for a lower card )

Then the question needs to be asked is there a 9080xtx with said 32gb Vram in the back there waiting to be unleashed upon the 5080 ???

It makes perfect sense for AMD to drop a game changer after Nvidia has shown there cards !!

( I dont see a 5090 beater and its pure speculation 100% but you never know with AMD they have seemed to dragged their feet this gen and done some pretty weird things after last gen , so i wonder why ?? )

( blame tweaks or drivers what ever PR speak AMD is spewing out they could be hiding something bigger than just the 9070xt )

With some people reporting melting plugs on the 5090 and it being a massive cost then the 5080 being less than a 4090 in performance!

I would wait till AMD show their hand before i bought anything !!

The 5080 is slightly faster in raster, and definitely better in ray tracing. On the other hand there are reports of some cards catching fire due to the power connector. So if you did have any issues, how long until you get a replacement gpu?

If you got it at msrp maybe sell the 5080 and wait until the AMD 9000 series or pick up a 50 series cards once there’s more stock.
