Actually a 6790 is more bang for the same or less buck than the 550ti.

^

Not only that but you can get a 6850 for pennies more that really gives the 550ti a run for its money.

People on toms love to suggest any nvidia card no matter if performance < price.

But if you wanna be a THG fanboy bias man, get a 550ti cuz its so THG leet.

First of all the 550 Ti is no good. Better to cut back on super-sizing your McDonald's Value Meals and go for a GTX 560 at least.

Second, those previous pro-AMD comments show up the fundamental problem... some people assume that it's an interchangeable proposition, AMD or Nvidia, it's just a price-performance decision. For others, there's a bigger picture involving the total ownership/gaming experience. For them, it's not an interchangeable AMD or Nvidia thing, there truly are other variables that can lead to a clear choice that goes beyond a simplistic price-performance analysis.

HEY!
got mine OC'd to 1033 and play most anything high/ultra @40-45fps.

good enough for me :)

I understand there is a bigger picture. For fanboys the bigger picture is "X card has ~3% more fps than Y card while X card costs more than Y card, meaning X card is the better buy because of the extra 2fps in game.

Money wasted on insignificant frame boosts.

The reason I went with a 670 was because 1, I know I can oc it to 680 ez. (saved me $100). 2. I know it perfroms equally with the 79xx series as well. Saved me about $100 if I went that route.

Now I have a card that met my Price/performance ratio and offers the best FPS for the games I play. Because I can do that.

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to choose the best price/performance cards because they see a benchmark showing 1-5fps gains and say "That 5fps might come in handy later" versus "Glad I saved X money on getting this card that performs equal to the other card and can easily overclock past the extra 5fps from the other card."

I don't argue, I just enlighten.

What I always suggest is to look at benchmarks and see what games you own, then finding the best price/performance card to fit your gaming needs.

Fanboys will always pay the extra buck just to have their fanboy name. Smart buyers wait for the right deals and then make fanboys jelly. 😉

i'm telling mom you didn't finish your homework or take out the garbage before trolling!

i really can't complain about my 550ti, sure had there been a 6770 sitting on the shelf in front of me at the time, i would have reached for that.
but any game i have played; crysis2, BFBC2 and BC3; it has been enough. sometimes the OC gets "temperamental" but spending 80 seconds to reboot solves that.

though yeah, i am drooling over a GTX 670!

Holy wow. I'm just agreeing the 550ti isn't the best bang for the buck because it's true. It doesn't make me a pro-AMD fanboy and it doesn't mean the 550ti has horrible value either. Relax ppl. I'm rockin' a GTS 450 myself...if I were pro-AMD I would have grabbed a 5770 at the time instead.

No mal, you're cool :)
Anyway....just tryin' to help out bawchica/mayankle. If he's looking at a ~$150 card to get by on the 550ti simply just doesn't make sense unless he has something against AMD cards.

EDIT: You get a 560ti hawk?

Ivy is pretty much the same as sandy but doesn't clock as high because it's worse at getting rid of heat....although it is more power efficient.

EDIT: I actually am impressed with PD...even though it does not catch up with sandy it does surpass the 'stars' cores by a very significant margin.

the 560 ti is good, the 550 ti is crap.

I just need the 650 to come out =\

I have SLi N560GTX-Ti Hawks in my i5-2500K unit.. (3840 x 1024) and there hangin' in for now.. 😉

I just sold my SLi N460GTX Hawks in my 975BE unit. ($135 each)
then got a N570GTX TF III PE/OC to replace them.. ($260 shipped)

now the AMD unit is going away for i5-3450 in the next week or two.

Yeah... My bad, just looked at the benchmarks again, realize the 570 is better. Anyways, is the 570 still a better choice against the 7850 OC to OC? Couldn't find benchmarks with that in it.

Edit: I agree that getting the 2500k was a better choice.

why not.?
sold my AMD unit and after long consideration the 2500K was the better move then Ivy.
for me anyways.
and going from a 975BE @ 4.0GHz to an i5-2400 is an upgrade but not worth it.
I got enough coin from my AMD that I still have a few dollars left over for the motherboard of my choice
and NO compromising..

(I do not have extravagant taste in motherboards just solid and but will be a B3 with SLi of course.)

question.?
i5-2500K ($189 shipped) vs i5-3550 ($205 shipped)

Hold with you AMD rig until the 8170 appears, it is around the corner and it looks promissing

My friend just bought a gtx 550 ti.He needed to have a dedicated physx card before buying kepler,so I didn't stop him.The 550 ti has good value as a physx card.
@mal
I've seen benches that show i5 3450 is on par with 2500.But you've got the 2500K and its nice to have a processor which allows one to overdrive with OC at the time of need.Congrats. :)

Did you tell him that lower end physx cards can bottleneck higher end dedicated cards?

I'd rather have a tesla card for my physx :pt1cable:

Honestly tho, I see no reason to buy a 550ti when there are better cards for their price point.

To buy one purely as a physx card is an even larger waste when you can find a used 460 for phsyx that would be just dandy and cost a good bit less :)

Goodbye to the era of 6xxx/5xx. Atleast soon anyways (once prices drop)

Good to know!

AFK buying a 680 for physx for my 670 machine 😉
