Keyboard stops working in XP

The PS2 keyboard in my computer has stopped working! After booting in XP,
keyboard does not respond and the device manager shows keyboard device with a
yellow bang sign. When I check the properties of this device, it says that
device is not working properly because the registry is either damaged or
corrupted. I tried uninstalling the device from device manager and
reinstalling it from a reboot. But it did not work. I then uninstalled the
keyboard from device manager, unplugged the keyboard and rebooted in XP. But
the device manager showed a keyboard with a yellow bang sign when there was
no keyboard physically connected!

Help me please.

Check that the keyboard drivers are installed correctly -
ControlPanel/Keyboard... see if the driver (Standard Microsoft Keyboard...
is present). While in ControlPanel, make sure that the Language and Regional
settings are set to English or whatever version XP you have.

Another thing to try is to delete the KBoard driver in Hidden device (in
Hardware manager/ Show hidden devices) since XP keeps a copy of any driver
it needs to boot. Might be a corrupted one so it will reinstall from CD or
CAB.

Otherwise, try another keyboard that works and see what you get.

SOLUTION!

This worked for me and the guy who posted it. We had the exact same problems assuming you are showing error code 41. Might still work with code 39 as well.

That worked great I had the same problem and spent the last 18 hours trying to find the problem , Reloading drivers running scans and nothing worked , I was close to redoing my whole system and i found your advice. There was an added word that did not look right before kbdclass in the upper filter and removed it and left kbdclass in there because I knew that was for the keyboard . mine was error 39

This worked for me! I had a Code 39 error and found an entry before kbdclass and removed it and my laptop keyboard now works just great. Thanks so much.

I also had Error 39 I am a novice at computer skills so for those who need additional help here is what to do:

if you have a password to log into your computer, clearly you can not log on, so restart your computer and enter safe mode

then go to preferences and user accounts, now turn off your password for the main user you wish to log into

now relog into your computer and it should work

open up an on screen keyboard (usually under accessories in the start menu)

now go to: "run" under the start menu and type in "regedit" with the on screen keyboard

now search for the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

now click on upperfilters(last thing on list)

now remove the additional word (mine was DumaNT)

now go to device manager and "uninstall" the keyboard

now search for changes to devices (icon with computer screen and magnifying glass)

and presto, your keyboard words.

This works for my Code 39, which was a result of a problem with my antivirus. Hope this helps. I literally destroyed my keyboard trying to figure this out and had to buy another one.

Thank you for posting this solution - this was exactly what was occurring with my laptop. I cannot figure out how the problem occurred? However the solutions fit the bill. I did come across others, such as draining the laptop of all its power - However, this was the fix.

I might be having the same problem with my compaq notebook.

however, my windows 7 requires a password and even if I boot on safe mode or any other mode available when pressing F8 upon boot time, it still requires password

any work around for windows 7 for me to try the registry fix? I also dont have the password recovery disk for windows 7.

There's a problem here... The fix you are looking at is for Windows XP and will not come close to working for Windows 7.
