An interesting thing happened to me. Just recently decided to upgrade my computer with the usual overclocker's system these days -- AMD Barton 2500+ oc-ed to 3200+ (200MHz * 10.5 multiplier), 512MB of pc3200 (400MHz) Ram, and motherbooard with Nvidia's nForce2 chipset.
So, I buy AMD Barton 2500+, Abit NF-S ver. 2.0, and a Hyper X 512MB (2*256) Kingston pc3200 kit. Now, this 512MB ram kit is part #KHX3200K2/512 and supports timing of 2-2-2-6-1 @ 400MHZ and 2-2-2-5-1 @ 333MHZ. Anyways, I put my computer together, format C drive, install Win XP Pro, all while running the CPU at default 2500+ (333MHZ FSB) and Memory at 2-2-2-5-1 @ 333MHz. Everything works fine, I install all the software, drivers, and games that I use.
Now it's time to overclock. I set my cpu to 3200+ (200 * 10.5, 400MHz FSB), and memory to 400MHz and 2-2-2-6-1 timings. Boot up, run Rainbow Six: Raven Shield (current game of choice), computer reboots automatically after a few minutes.
So, I try playing around with BIOS settings, set memory timings to Auto or by SPD, still the same results: playing Raven Shield results in automatic reboot after a few minutes, in windows XP explorer keeps crashing all the time, and testing in Prime95 fails after a few seconds due to "Hardware Failure". Finally, I set memory timings to 2-3-3-6-1 and from then everything runs rock stable again: No crashed, no automatic reboots, Prime95 testing runs fine as well.
Now, the whole point of buying that Kingston 512MB kit (KHX3200K2/512) was that I could run it at 400 MHz with 2-2-2-6-1 timings. If I wanted to run 2-3-3-6-1 I could have bought the cheaper version that's specified to run at those settings. Seems to me pretty pointless to try and exhange it at this point, too much of a hassle. But I was wondering if it happened to someone else, or if I am missing something?
P.S. I could not actually set command rate to 1T, since NF-S doesn't display it, and doesn't have an option to change it. Dunno if it would make a difference.
