I think that the main purpose to this device is to allow very fast transfer from external storage. If you have to drop something to different machines in different plases (and not using very fast internet connection) this can be guite useful. To normal home user not so much, but in a company some computer troubleshooter can put all their tools and stuf in to really fast storage and use it anywhere. I could use that kind of device...
 
This still looks like something aimed to the enthusiast segment of the market. High performance and more capacity than your typical USB thumb drive and undoubtedly at a premium price.

I use a 32GB USB Thumb drive for my mobile file needs and it's certainly more than enough room for a ton of tools, utilities and whatever else a tech would need.
