Hey all,
Im a fixture in the graphics forum looking for some advice from you all.
Ive got an older laptop running a KM133 chipset with a Mobile duron 1.1

Im looking to move up to a mobile athlon XP or other chip, problem is that the chipset's max FSB is 200Mhz. I noticed all the mobile chips are 266's. If I bought an mobile XP running at 1.8 and then ran it at a 200Mhz bus, would I really see much improvement? I know theres more cache, but I wanted your opinions.

Any suggestions as to other options are greatly appreciated!

I don't know what cores your lappy supports, but the mobile XP's are unlocked so assuming you have enough room to increase the multiplier appropriately, you could have a possible upgrade.

Interesting idea. Don't know if it can or has been done.

The VIA KM133/KM266 chipset is a parallel line to the KT133/KT133A/KT266/KT266A/etc chipsets but with integrated graphics. All of the which have had some successes with unlocked chips up to and including mobile Bartons. Some mobos are easy to make work than others. Take for example, the Abit KT7 (KT133, 200 FSB). It has been exceptional at handling everything up to and including mobile Barton and at full speed (but at reduced FSB) as long as the processor was unlocked AND had the high multiplier bit enabled (either by default or by modification). Even worked with the early mobile Bartons (unlocked) despite being 266 FSB procesors. KT7, by default, POSTs at 20 x 100 = 2000 Mhz (as do many VIA legacy mobos) just needing a chip which is capable of POSTing at 2000 Mhz.

I haven't heard anything, neither successes nor failures, using the KM133 chipset but it might be worth a try.

Even if it works for you, heat is going to be an issue I should think.

The KM133, accordiong to VIA's website is based on the KT133 and not the KT133A, so the FSB is maxed at 200MHz. Unfortunately, theres no adjustments AT ALL in this Compaq's BIOS (Presario 730).

Ive vever seen such a naked BIOS, honestly. I think Ive just got boot options and the clock.

If I remember correctly, when I unlocked an older Athlon I had by penciling the L1 bridges, I came across a useful site which had a diagram of the chip and the bridges and showed the layout for the different multipliers and frequencies. Anyone know what Im talking about and have the URL?

If I bought a mobile XP and used the bridges to configure the multiplier, would that work since I have absolutely no control with the BIOS?

I helped my freind upgrade the CPU in his Presario 700 laptop (KM133 chipset). The fastest CPU you can use is the Athlon 4 1600+ (1.4GHz). The Athlon 4 is a Mobile Athlon XP with a 200MHz FSB. We tried a Mobile Athlon XP 1500+ but it underclocked because the chipset was not able to use 266MHz FSB.

The Athlon 4 1.4GHz should be a big imporovement over your Duron 1.1GHz. Check eBay, thats where we got the CPU for his laptop.

I simply meant that the KMxxx chipsets, KM133/KM266, paralleled the KTxxx chipsets up to a point. I didn't claim they were equivalent to any specific KTxxx models because, frankly, I don't know the details.

Well, no BIOS options is going to be a problem for you. You'll will have to do some kind of mod'ing to change multipliers.

However, Before you mod anything I would suggest you first try the chip. It might just work similarly to how I describe earlier.

Next, I would suggest the wire in socket modsto obtain the similar results as brige mod'ing but are completely reversible. Bridge mods are a pain to reverse.

Here are some of the sites I recommend.

Fab51 to which I already provided a link but here's the homepage (English version). They have good information on bridge mods.

<A HREF="http://fab51.com/index-e.html" target="_new">http://fab51.com/index-e.html</A>

A good site for not only bridge mods but also socket mods and pin mods is OCInside. Click the "Workshop" button. Voltage mod'ing might be necessary should your CPU try to POST at too high a speed, like my Abit KT7.

<A HREF="http://www.ocinside.de/index_e.html" target="_new">http://www.ocinside.de/index_e.html</A> (English version)

Wes Newell's site is one of the pioneer sites regarding legacy motherboards and XPs.

<A HREF="http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/" target="_new">http://mysite.verizon.net/res0exft/</A>

All of those sites have adequate information regarding multipliers using legacy boards.

The great thing about higher speed XP-M's (and also older Tbreds) is that they are unlocked. They also support multiplier remaps. By using bridge, pin, or wire mods you can set multipliers up to 24X. This is more than enough to compensate for the low, 100 Mhz (200), FSB speed.

The real test for this motherboard would be to install a mobile XP2400+ or mobile XP2500+ because the high multiplier bit is already enabled. (There are no remaps without high order bit being set). Then see if it POSTs without mods and see at which speed POSTs.

Failing this you would need to hard set the multipliers with one of the mod methods. However, you still need to own an unlocked processor.

So if I was going to buy a chip, would you suggest something like a standard Athlon XP 1800 or a Mobile Athlon XP?

XP1800+ is no good because it's locked. Your laptop would be running it at 11.5 x 100 or 1150 Mhz with no way to fix it.

A Mobile XP 2400+ and higher are all good choices for legacy motherboards. However, for your KM133 the XP-M 2600+ might be the better choice. The higher default multiplier (15X, I think) may really help you.

These are the results you can expect.

- It might not POST at all with no resolution.
- It might POST with default multiplier but 100 Mhz FSB. (1500 Mhz, with 512KB cache, wouldn't be terrible on that old laptop).
- It might POST at 20 x 100 (similarly to Abit KT7) which might be too hot for that laptop
- Some other default speed.

POSTing at any speed would be good news. Even if you don't get an acceptable result by default. This would open the door for mod's. Forcing the multiplier tends to be more successful.

There are still no guarantees.

Personally, I think it will POST. I just don't know at what speed.

Wish I was the one trying this. I'm very curious on how workable this is.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.

I'll be trying an XP-M 2400 in the next couple of weeks, so I'll let you know what happens.

Well, I tossed in a Mobile Xp 1800+ I bought on Ebay and it worked flawlessly. No tweaking needed at all!

Thanks for all the advice

Does it work at full speed or is it underclocked?

I only ask because someone else posted that a mobile XP1500+ (or mobile XP1600+) ran underclocked on his buddy's XM133 motherboard.

It runs at full speed, according to CPUZ.
