I noticed my laptop’s cooling fan wasn’t blowing air out of the system as it should, so I disassembled it. I found that it was actually pushing hot air back inside. The fan has a small opening that lets air leak through, and I’m looking for a suitable material to seal this opening. I thought about using some kind tape or putty, but I’m not sure if those two would work well.

Here is a visualization of the above:

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

What is the make and model of your laptop?

I’m looking for a suitable material to seal this opening
2-part epoxy, 3m painters tape are two options you can look at to help force the air to go through the channeling on the squirrel cage fan.
Hello! Thanks for the fast reply!

Heres my laptop make and model: MSI, GL62M 7RC.

I'll definitely look into that recommendation thank you so much!

Just an FYI, this is how the airflow should be in a squirrel cage fan;

so long as the air is going through the center and is being expelled to the large mouth like vent, you're good. You should also inspect the fins for the cooling assembly for any dust/debris clogging the vents.
Got it, thank you so much for all this information!

There's definitely something wrong with how it's seated, although all screws are properly tightened. I can't think of a single event that could've caused this 🤔

And yes, I've already cleaned all the dust inside inside the vent yet still no airflow, like, none at all! It's all going out the sides of the cooling fan.
