my speakers work great but when I try to turn up my volume and it turns itself right back down. What can I do to fix that?

Using the manual switch on side of unit ?
Try this:
Right click on the speaker in the tray and select Playback Devices.
On the Playback tab select the speakers associated with the sound card then select Properties.

From the options revealed, the levels can be set. Pay particular attention to the Tone tab. The adjudtment of the sliders here can largely affect the overall volume.
